 Care Sheet Submitted By:

Years Experience:

10 to 15 Years

Species:

Carpet Python

Other Species or Phases this Care Sheet May Cover:

Coastal Carpet Python

Sexing and Characteristics:

There are lots of ways. You can probe them which you insert a surgical tube to find the presence of the hemipenes just below the cloaca, DON’T DO THIS IF YOU’RE NOT SURE HOW. Cloaca Popping which you roll you’re thumb along the tail upwards the snake to pop the hemipenes out, ONLY DO THIS ON JUVENILES. Or their is a visual examination. Females have long and slim tails and have small spurs and Males have chubbier tails and larger spurs.

Mostly Active During:

Night

Substrate and Water Needs:

I use newspaper because substrate can cause indigestion problems. BUT remember do you want the snake as the centerpiece or the cage as the centerpiece. The water has to be large enough for them to bath in.

Lighting and UVB:

They don’t need lighting but all snakes can benefit from fluorescent lighting.

Temperatures and Humidity:

I keep the temperatures in the 80 Fahrenheit region. I cool them once a year for a week to encourage their breeding for the following year. All they need for their humidity is a spray of water

Heating and Equipment:

You can keep the heat up from heat mats which you can buy from your local reptile shop. I use exo Terra fluorescent tubes for lighting.

Caging Provided:

Keep juveniles in small cages and for every foot in Length for the snake a extra square feet of floor space they need. Don’t give them to big cages because they get stressed more easily and they won’t eat

Diet:

Carnivorous

Description of Diet:

I feed juvenile Carpets Rat Pups and my adult 10ft carpets I feed 2 Extra Large Rats once every fortnight. Don’t give them food bigger than their girth.

Supplements, Nutrition and Usage:

I put on reptavite once a month on their food for vitamins.

Maintenance:

They need to have clean cages most of the time, hopefully all of the time. I clean the cages with a product called Bio-Vite. 48 hours after they have eaten i put them in the bath so they can go to the toilet because with big snakes you don’t want to clean large amount of feces every week.

Some Words on this Species:

They are a very nice snake although they are notorious for being nippy when young. But they are very good choice for a pet snake
