 Care Sheet Submitted By:

Ajay

Years Experience:

5 to 10 Years

Species:

Red Eared Slider

Other Species or Phases this Care Sheet May Cover:

Baby Red Eared Sliders.

Sexing and Characteristics:

The male Red Eared Slider has multiple dark black spots on each of the bottom scutes. The female has a single lighter black dot on each of the bottom scutes. The male rectum is beyond the edge of the shell, the females rectum is just inside the edge of the shell.Adult males are 7-9 inches in length, while the female is 11-14 inches long.It is difficult to determine the gender of baby Red Eared Sliders, you should be able to determine the gender by the time it is 4 inches in length.

Mostly Active During:

Day

Substrate and Water Needs:

A 25-30 gallon Aquarium filled half-way with water is great.About one-third of the tank should have land that the turtle can get on.You can buy floating land for the turtle to bask on in most pet stores.Although not entirely necessary, you can buy some small to medium pebbles to cover the bottom of the aquarium.Sand is not a good substrate,it causes the tank to become very messy in a short period of time.

Lighting and UVB:

A UVB Lamp and a Flood Light are necessary.Natural sun light can substitute for the Flood Light.

Temperatures and Humidity:

During the day the temperatures should be kept around 85-90 degrees and during the night maintain the temperature at 70-75 degrees. The humidity should be kept around 40%.

Heating and Equipment:

A filter is definitely necessary.A UVB Lamp and a Flood light will work well.

Caging Provided:

It can grow up to 14 inches in length if its a female,so a good housing for it would be a 25-30 gallon tank. The tank should be cleaned about once every two weeks.

Diet:

Omnivorous

Description of Diet:

They will eat small fish(minnows are a good fish to feed them) and some fruits and vegetables.Turtle food pellets should be the staple food.NEVER FEED THE TURTLE CITRUS FRUITS,IT DESTROYS ITS DIGESTIVE SYSTEM.

Supplements, Nutrition and Usage:

N/A

Maintenance:

The aquarium should be cleaned every 2 weeks and a water cleaner should also be used.I recommend ’’Chlor Out’’ from Wardley Watercare, which rids the water of Chlorine and Chloramines in tap water. It is much cheaper to fill the aquarium up with tap water from the bath tub and use Chlor Out on it than it is to buy gallons of Spring Water. As an additional cleaner I would use ’’Stress Zyme’’.It speeds the development of the biological filter to eliminate ammonia and nitrite and helps clean an already dirty aquarium. Both of these together will cost less than $7.

Some Words on this Species:

This species of turtle is a semi-difficult pet to take care of,this turtle should be purchased buy people who are responsible and are knowledgeable of its needs.
