 Care Sheet Submitted By:

Years Experience:

Under 1 Year

Species:

Red-eared slider

Other Species or Phases this Care Sheet May Cover:

yellow bellied sliders

Sexing and Characteristics:

Males have longer tails then females and their anal holes are found farther from the body then on the females also the male have longer foreclaws and females are larger

Mostly Active During:

Day

Substrate and Water Needs:

They require a basically all aquatic enclosure with just some basking spots and resting spots they do not need any substrates but large gravel is the best to use if you want to

Lighting and UVB:

They need a basking lamp and a u.v bulb that is within 6 inches from their basking spot

Temperatures and Humidity:

The basking temp should be about 85-90 degrees and the water should be around 75 to 80 degrees

they obviously do not require humidity since they spend most of their time in the water

Heating and Equipment:

They need a heat lamp for drying out, a u.v to process calcium, a filter to keep the cage clean, a water heater, and a few basking spots for exposure to heat and u.v

Caging Provided:

My current set up houses two baby RES’s and it is a plastic tub that is 22inx15in(lxw) with 4 inches of water and a heat lamp and u.v over their basking log and rock with water plants and filer and thermometer along with a heater

Diet:

Omnivorous

Description of Diet:

They are almost living garbage cans and will eat almost anything but not all things are good and the ones that are good are

1. commercial diets(turtle sticks)
2.pre-killed and live feeder fish
3.earthworms
4.low fat finely cut pieces of beef and beef heart and cooked chicken
5. can be fed moistened high quality low fat dog food
6.romaine lettuce, strawberries, apples, carrots, and dark green vegetables

Supplements, Nutrition and Usage:

With the proper diet the do not need much additional supplements but hatchlings and juveniles need calcium/vit D3 for proper growth only do this 2 a week and once a week when adults but if you are only giving calcium without D3 give it as much as you want since they’ll just pass the excess calcium

Maintenance:

Their water should be changed every 2 to 3 days without a filter and once a week with a filter unless the cage is to dirty

clean out excess food that’s been in for longer then 2 hours or more and net out large feces that the filter can not suck up

Some Words on this Species:

They make very fun pets and will learn to eat from your hand

BUT ALWAYS REMEMBER TURTLES CAN CARRY SALMONELLA SO WASH YOUR HANDS AFTER MISSING WITH ANYTHING YOUR TURTLES HAVE TOUCHED OR BEEN NEAR
