Care Sheet for Hognose Snakes

Average Rating Given To This Care Sheet Is 5.00    (1=lowest, 5=highest)    Last Updated: 05/17/2005

Main Category:

Snakes

Sub Category:

Hognose Snakes

 Care Sheet Submitted By:

Melancholypunk

Years Experience:

3 to 5 Years

Species:

Western Hognose

Other Species or Phases this Care Sheet May Cover:

Westerns mainly.

Sexing and Characteristics:

Females are considerably ’thicker’ and a tad longer than males.

Mostly Active During:

Both

Substrate and Water Needs:

A mix of bark chippings and soil is what a lot of pet stores advise. It can depend on you’re snake however. Bark chippings provide a good clean burrowing material. I use a dust free coral sand however.

A large bowl/container of water for drinking/bathing.

Lighting and UVB:

No UV lighting as such is required. No basking lamp is required either.

Temperatures and Humidity:

This is what you should pay attention to:

between 70-90 or so during the day, and a drop to 65 or so at night.

Heating and Equipment:

A heat pad (glass side or underfloor, really doesn’t mater too much)

Caging Provided:

My tank for my almost full grown male is 3ftx2ftx2ft. I believe people have kept good snakes in smaller but i just so happened to have that tank in the attic. Rocks/Dry branches are good for you’re snake to hide/burrow/climb.

You may want to keep something small enough so you’re snake can just sit under at the cool side. This provides a good secure hide that i can almost assure you will find you’re snake under whenever you look for it in the morning.

Diet:

Carnivorous

Description of Diet:

Fuzzies/Pinkies are ideal. Most westerns will take these readily while others (especially males) can be picky eaters. Provide F.or.P’s once a week for younger snakes, and maybe once ever 2 weeks for adults.

I’ve never needed to scent anything for my snake so it would be wrong for me to instruct anything in this case. Pamula (user) has a good care sheet entry for that.

Supplements, Nutrition and Usage:

None required.

Maintenance:

Basically none. You remove waste whenever you see it :P

Some Words on this Species:

What a personality they have. I’ve NEVER been bitten. They hiss if you really get them going but will probably never bite you.
VERY good snake for younger kids. LOVELY markings, look some what like rattlesnakes.
