 Care Sheet Submitted By:

Years Experience:

5 to 10 Years

Species:

Crested Gecko

Other Species or Phases this Care Sheet May Cover:

Gargoyle gecko care is very similar.

Sexing and Characteristics:

Sexing can be done at 20 grams. Males have obvious hemipenal bulges at the base of their tail. Females only have a slight bulge but nothing compared to a male. Males should be housed alone to prevent fighting. Breeding should wait until 35 grams. You can look for pre-anal pores with a 16x magnifying glass. They are regular scales with a dark dot in the middle. they are lined up like this right above the vent ^. Only males have these.

Mostly Active During:

Night

Substrate and Water Needs:

You should use paper towel for babies and juvies. You can use coconut bark substrate for the adults or use reptile carpet. Sphagnum moss can be used to keep the humidity up. There should be a daily misting as they like to drink the droplets. There should be a water bowl also. Organic soil without permilite or vermiculite can also be used.

Lighting and UVB:

No lighting is required if you have plenty of ambient lighting. UVB isn’t needed unless your house gets below 70 degrees f in the day. UVB does improve the color. You may have to use it if you dont use the crested gecko diet.

Temperatures and Humidity:

Temperatures should be in the upper 70s in the day and the high 60s in the night. Temps can be in the lower 80s in the day as long as it cools down at night. Humidity can go from 50% to 80%.

Heating and Equipment:

As long as your house stays at room temperature, you don’t need any heating. Just avoid the heat rocks as the geckos delicate lamelle can become damaged. A humidity gage and a temperature gage are needed. Digital ones are more accurate.

Caging Provided:

10 gallon tall terrarium with a screen lid or a 10 gallon turned up on edge for babies and juvies. Adults can be kept in a 20 gallon turned up on edge. A 30 gallon is good for a trio.

Diet:

Omnivorous

Description of Diet:

They like non- citrus fruits and insects. babyfood can be used as a treat but shouldn’t be used as a main food for breeding geckos. The hatch rate will be reduced greatly. Crickets that are gut loaded or dusted with calcium should be used. Chasing insects give them something to do so it does wonders for their mental state. Insects shouldn’t be bigger than the distance between the gecko’s eyes. You can also use crested gecko diet which is a complete diet but you should still feed insects occasionally.

Supplements, Nutrition and Usage:

If you are using insects, make sure they are dusted with a vitamin supplement or gut loaded. If using pureed fruits, add calcium to it.

Maintenance:

You should spot clean everyday and remove dead crickets. Change the substrate every week or so. Clean the whole tank every 3 weeks.

Some Words on this Species:

They are a fun and easy species to care for. They can lose their tails and they wont grow back. There are many morphs and more becoming available. (be careful!! once you get one you cant stop.)
Overall, This is one of the best geckos to have.
