Sub Category:

Frogs

 Care Sheet Submitted By:

Anonymous

Years Experience:

3 to 5 Years

Species:

African Dwarf Clawed Frog

Other Species or Phases this Care Sheet May Cover:

African Clawed Frog

Sexing and Characteristics:

Mature males have small white bumps behind their front legs resembling pimples. Mature females are usually a little larger, about 20%, and plumper.

Mostly Active During:

Night

Substrate and Water Needs:

Sand is the best as these little guys like to dig around searching for food and create "burrows" to hide in

Lighting and UVB:

Any is fine, no specific lighting is really required for them. Personally I use full spectrum fluorescent lighting.

Temperatures and Humidity:

75-85 degrees is preferred by most, I keep mine at about 80 F.

Heating and Equipment:

5 watt per gallon heater. A small filter is suggested to keep the tank a little cleaner. One of the little cheap stick on the side jobs do fine. Do not use an under-gravel filter as these pull the food out of the frogs’ reach before they find it.

Caging Provided:

The rule of thumb is 1.5 gallons per frog. I have 4 in a 10 gallon setup right now. This will allow for 2-3 more in the future.

Diet:

Carnivorous

Description of Diet:

Brine shrimp (live), Blood worms, Tubifex worms, black-worms. They take live much quicker than freeze dried, if you have the space (and time) to raise it.

Supplements, Nutrition and Usage:

None necessary. I don’t suggest using any.

Maintenance:

Replace 50-75% of water weekly, smaller amounts through the week if necessary.

Some Words on this Species:

The aquarium must have a good lid with no little spaces that these guys can slip out of. The best system out there now for these frogs is the Eclipse system. It comes with a great filtration system built right in the hood. It is rather hard to keep tadpoles alive, so do a lot of research before trying. It involves a lot of time and hard work
