Main Category:

Sub Category:

Geckos

 Care Sheet Submitted By:

D00m

Years Experience:

5 to 10 Years

Species:

The Western Banded Gecko

Other Species or Phases this Care Sheet May Cover:

Texas Banded Geckos

Utah Banded Geckos

Sexing and Characteristics:

Males have "spurs" where the tail begins as well as a bulge. Females have a slight bulge but no spurs.

Mostly Active During:

Night

Substrate and Water Needs:

Sifted playsand, newspaper, repticarpet, and papertowel. If your looking for that natural look and must have sand please use sifted playsand so there is no chance of impaction.

Lighting and UVB:

Standard 75watt heat lamp is all that is needed. No UVB is required. I use exo terra moonlight bulbs because they provide heat in the day and are invisible, and provide heat at night and simulate moonlight.

Temperatures and Humidity:

Hot side should not exceed 100F. They are comfortable at 90-95. Cool side should only slip down in to the high 70’s but should really be maintained at 80.

Heating and Equipment:

I use a basic 75watt heat lamp that you can buy at your local pet store.

Caging Provided:

A 10 gallon is fine for two housed together. I recommend housing one in a 10 gallon as well, but 5 1/2 gals. can also be used.

Diet:

Carnivorous

Description of Diet:

Dusted crickets, meal worms, and grasshoppers (not recommended).

Supplements, Nutrition and Usage:

I personally dont use herpative vitamins but you can if you want. Dusting with calcium is a must. I use rep-cal to obtain my calcium dust.

Maintenance:

Clean feces out when seen. Fresh water should always be available. If using papertowel or newspaper then you should change out weekly.

Some Words on this Species:

I currently care for two Western Banded Geckos. I love this species and wont give them up for anything. They are a little on the small side, but if you pamper them enough you can get them fat :) If you have recently caught your gecko then wait at least 2 weeks before trying to handle. This species takes a while to settle down when moved. Juviniles will give a squeak if threatened enough. This may shock people but it is neither dangerous nor harmful to the gecko. Overall this is a great species to have for beginners. They resemble the leopard gecko a lot and are just plain cool. My longest living one is on her 5th year but is expected to live 7 - 10 years.
