 Care Sheet Submitted By:

Anonymous

Years Experience:

10 to 15 Years

Species:

Emperor scorpion (imperial scorpion)

Other Species or Phases this Care Sheet May Cover:

none

Sexing and Characteristics:

The easiest ways:
1)look under your scorpion (were the chest is) you will see two thing with ’hair’ coming out. these are called pectines. a males are much longer then a females, but they grow with age.

2) look ate the claws. this method is harder but you don’t need two to do it (no need to compare) males are long and skinny where as females are short and fat (i only heard of this method recently)

Mostly Active During:

Night

Substrate and Water Needs:

A SHALLOW water holder with a rock near the side to help them get out if they fall in (they cant swim). the best substrate is pesticide free potting soil. scorpions LOVE to dig, in fact, if they cant, they will become stressed and may fall ill or die. also, have a minimum of two hiding places, and an additional one per scorpion. also, it is not necessary but a good idea to have logs since emps come from the rain forest.

Lighting and UVB:

Not required, but black lights at night are fun every now and then since scorpions glow. if you want to use a heating light, use a RED 50 or 60 watt bulb. scorpions hate light but most cant see red, or so I’ve heard.

Temperatures and Humidity:

Keep temp and humidity in the 75-85 range, if your scorp moults boost both of these up to 90. have a cool side(75-77) and a warm side(80-85) have at least one shelter on each side so your scorpion can choose how warm it wants to be

Heating and Equipment:

Have either a heat pad on the side since scorpions dig to AVOID the heat, or a 50-60 watt red bulb

Caging Provided:

I have a 30 gal for my two, FLOOR SPACE IS BETTER THAN HEIGHT! a good rule is 10 gallons per scorpion

Diet:

Carnivorous

Description of Diet:

Have a constant supply of crickets

Supplements, Nutrition and Usage:

Not needed but if your scorp is moulting, pregnant, or old, dust lightly once a week with calcium and vitamins

Maintenance:

Clean cage at least every other week and change water once a week. also, it is a good idea to re arrange cage sometimes so you and the scorp(s) aren’t bored, but not to often since this may stress them out.

Some Words on this Species:

Emps are pretyy docile, but the are an animal, there is no predicting them. the less you handle the better. if angered they will sting or pinch. but they are very nice pets. i hope you enjoy your emporer if you plan to get one and if you dont have one or plan to, you dont know what you are missing.
