 Care Sheet Submitted By:

Tommy

Years Experience:

10 to 15 Years

Species:

Water Snakes

Other Species or Phases this Care Sheet May Cover:

All north american water snakes can be kept in the same manner.

Sexing and Characteristics:

Females are much larger than males.

Mostly Active During:

Both

Substrate and Water Needs:

Water snakes are very prone to blister desise and there for should be kept on a very dry substrate. I do not like using paper towls or new paper. I use aspen beeding and dryed cypress mulch in an open aired cage. Water dish should be big enough for the snake to competly sumberge it self.

Lighting and UVB:

Water snake and most other snakes do not need UVB lights or any special lights at all.

Temperatures and Humidity:

Water snakes are most active in cooler weather and there for common house temps are fine for most water snakes. If you want to be exact temps around 75-80 degrees f are just fine. Regular house hold humidity are just fine as well.

Heating and Equipment:

If your house is not above 75 degrees the a under tank heater will work great. Do not use "hot rocks" they get to hot. You will also need a hide box and a water dish.

Caging Provided:

I keep baby water snakes in a 5 gal tank and adults in 20 to 40 gal tanks. Water snakes are very good escape artist and so you must make shure your cage is escape poof.

Diet:

Carnivorous

Description of Diet:

Most water snakes will eat a diet of just small fish and frogs. I have heard of some water snakes eating mice before i have not seen it.

Supplements, Nutrition and Usage:

I use a viamin supplement once a month. You do not have to but i do.

Maintenance:

These are very high maintenance snakes and the cage must be spot cleaned every day!! I you let it slip for a couple days you are looking at one heck of a smell.

Some Words on this Species:

Most wild cought water snakes will bite like all heck. Some adult water snakes will never tame but if you get a juvinile or baby you should be able to tame them.
