 Care Sheet Submitted By:

Years Experience:

Over 20 Years

Species:

Cali kings

Other Species or Phases this Care Sheet May Cover:

none

Sexing and Characteristics:

1)you can get them probed for 100% accurateness.

2)females tend to be longer and fatter. this is only about 80% accurate and you need it to be an adult king. this doesn’t always work. i have a 6 foot male

Mostly Active During:

Night

Substrate and Water Needs:

WATER- a large bowl that the snake can easily fit its whole body into. change every 2-7 days depending n how often your king goes in there of if you can see the water is dirty.

SUBSTRATE- a lot of people say to use paper, in a word, don’t. use either aspen bed an a mix of dirt and/or ground up coconut(simulates dirt without the risk of parasites) and if you catch them, and u caught yours out in the desert, mix the dirt or coconut with calci sand to simulate the dessert. my king has aspen bed and coconut mixed.

Lighting and UVB:

The best is that repti sun 7.0. get the florescent, not the lamp because you want it warm all over, but have it more to one side to keep a arm side.

Temperatures and Humidity:

HUMIDITY-depending on where its from, the humidity should be between 10 and 50. a safe bet, keep it at 30-40.

TEMP- absolutely vital for the warm side to be above 90. keep cool about 70 (temps in Fahrenheit)

Heating and Equipment:

SHELTER- have a house on warm side and cool side. i recommend building your own.

EXERCISE AND TOOLS- have 1 or 2 large logs for your king to play/bask on. mine used to wait for the mouse to move onto the log and used it to help suffocate it. have a rough rock for it to use when shedding.

HEATING-other than the lamp thing, i have a heat pad under water to keep it warm and a heat pad by warm side shelter for extra warm

Caging Provided:

Though out my experience with most kings and 37 years with cal kings, i make my cages about 6 inches longer than the snake and keep them in it until the are 4 inches longer that it then build a new one. about 1/2 its length for the width and 1/2 the length for the height.

Diet:

Carnivorous

Description of Diet:

They will eat anything they can swallow. as long as the head of they prey is longer that its fattest point, its edible. mine right now eats rats. since some will eat almost daily given the opportunity, use your judgment on feeding. mine is fed every 7-10 days.

Supplements, Nutrition and Usage:

Not needed, all food items have calcium/protein and all that good stuff.

Maintenance:

Clean cage every 2 weeks. it is best to get them accustom to you soon. i waited to long and now mine poos on me when i pick him up. and its not normal feces, its yellow and runny with chunks =/

Some Words on this Species:

Good for beginners, and most of all, beautiful. they have beautiful black tongues (ell, at least they 4 i have and 2 my neighbor has.)
