 Nope

Why? so people will stop letting them go? Personally, I think the government is big enough as it is and I am not interested in giving them any more control over our pets. I do think pet shop owners and such should only sell iguanas and anacondas to qualified persons though. but illegalizing them, it just seems so unneccesary. Then, the next time someones ball python gets loose and sombody sues cuz they think its gonna eat their kid, ball pythons would be illegalized, then leopard geckos, then all reptiles and exotic animals. It is already happening in the uk. I think permits might possibly be a good idea in some cases though. anyway thats just what Ithink, so to answer your question, I do not agree.

Actaually, I kindof changed my mind. I think temporarily banning the sale of iguanas could help, there are just so many that need to be adopted and stuff, pets stores shouldn’t sell them, if someone really wants one and is responsible enough they can buy or adopt one from someone who cannot take care of theirs anymore. thats just for iguanas though.

I think it goes both ways. In some ways it would be good because maybe less iguanas will be released, ignored...and then ones that need homes will find them. But it could also start a reptile ban, lol. I think overall I agree. I would rather there be permits or something like that, however. Good question.

 Nope

Banning them from being sold will do little to stop private breeders from selling. And if they are harder to buy legally, people will start to sell them for higher prices and lower quality animals, much like the bans on pit bulls have done in some places. People still want them so they wind up getting them anyhow, and alot of the time they will be inbred. Kinda like the bans on guns too, they might be illegal but people still have them, same with drugs, etc., etc. Even if you had to have a permit to own them there will always be people that will skirt the law and own them anyhow and breed them. I do agree that there is a huge problem with irresponsible pet owners, but it is by no means an easy fix. Permits only mean more money and headaches for those of us who are responsible pet owners, and make more government jobs, then taxes to pay the salaries. Then who would be in charge of saying who can own and who can’t and what would requirements be to own. The last thing we need in the world of exotics is a governing body made up of people that have more than likely never even been in the same room as an exotic to be the deciding factor in who can and can’t have a particular pet. I don’t know what the answer to the problem might be, but I just don’t think that more government, even on a local level would be the way to go. Sorry for rambling on so long.

 Nope

If you need permits to have exotics then who’s to say that you don’t need a permit for a cat. Many many stray cats are on the streets because people just let them go. why not permits to own them aswell. In short; if you are responsible enough you should not have to have a permit. and to make owning and selling exotics illegal will basically raise thee crime rate a few hundred times. we are trying to lower the rate of crime not increade it. Be rsponsible and when you can nolonger house your pet whatever it may be find a good home for it.

I don’t think the government should have a say in my personal affairs and that includes what animals I choose to keep as pets. You normally always read about all the bad owners, stores, and breeders. There’s rarely stories about all the responsible people. It is a fact that some people don’t know what they’re doing, keep their animals badly, or release them oblivious to the environmental implications. However, let’s not simply write off all the people that are careful and responsible with their pets.

Also, I know a lot of people like the idea of permits but I personally view that as a tax. It’s good to assess peoples’ qualifications but only if it’s a free thing. The government just can’t get enough of taxes and they’ll increase the gas tax, fishing licenses, drivers license fees, and so on regardless of what the current rate is. A permit for ownership is just another item for them to abuse.

What is really needed is better education and a better network between organizations. That petfinder.com site is a great start. We have the technology today to help get educational materials out and connect owners to possible rescues, adoptions, or new ownership of an individual pet. There also needs to be harsher enforced penalities for bad care or dumping of pets.

If it was up to me people could own tigers, cougars, snakes, kangaroos, foxes, deer, and so on without any sort of permits or licenses. I’d require the dealers to record the name of the purchaser, type of animal, and so on and report it to a central database for every sale. Penalties for dumping your animal would be severe. You would be expected to care for it or find it a new home if something happened. All of the responsibility would be pinned on the shoulders of the owner of the animal which is something I don’t think we do enough today. Don’t penalize the good people for the actions of bad/stupid people. Make so that nobody wants to be bad/stupid because the penalties are severe.
