Interesting: CRICKET VIRUS
Read the link.. I just found this, its quite interesting.... I raise my own crickets(Actually black Field crickets), and feeders so this doesn’t bother me, but a few weeks ago my brother, who is an avid fisherman, came to me looking for them... He couldn’t find them in the numbers he wanted, I now possibly know why! BTW, if you care to know, they smash up the crickets, and "chum" the water, supposedly drives the cat fish wild... I’m not much of a fisher......... |

I’ve researched it and created an article on Wikipedia about the cricket paralysis virus. Apparently, it’s a picorna-like virus that was discovered in the 1960s, and may have originated from a moth virus. It hit Europe in 2002, and now the house cricket (the cricket we breed here in the US) is now practically extinct. Thankfully the breeders there resorted to using different species of cricket, since the virus only targets that species. It’s going to be harder here, though. A new proposal for a commercial insect has to be thoroughly examined and inspected and have to go through a bunch of tests before they are deemed environmentally safe (that is to say, they don’t become an invasive species). |
