Help me with my first pet :)

Dear all,

In a few months from now (plenty of time to research) i will be living on my own and a lizard is my choice as pet.

I like geckos, (also water dragons and basilisks but want something small)
I think the gargoyle gecko is my prefered gecko

ill sum what my favorite gecko should be able to do. if you know what geckos is for me please help me out:

(note that all of these are optional. a few is good)

-i like spikey lizards. with crests or something. white color or so (if this can be chosen)
-likes water
-rainforest ( no desert )
-likes climbing trees and leafvs and stuff
-prefer. one with a slender and long tail.
-rescue would be super.
-2 maximum to start of with
(all these are optional and whatever i get he will get all my love and care)

I like more lizards than geckos. if you go like "this guy doesnt need a gecko he needs this!" then please tell me.

Thx guys!

Hey there! I think a crested gecko would be perfect for you! Their way fun to watch. Come in all kinds of colors, and the have neat spikey crests over their eyebrows. Check em out!

Thx for the quick reply ! youre the chinese water dragon owner if im correct?
he looks absolutely lovely, but im so afraid that even a 3x3x3 meter cage isnt big enough for such active lizards.

Crested and gargoyles both look super! any reason why crested would be a better choice than gargoyle?

also. is there ( given that i place enough hides warm and cold spots and all the proper care ) anyway that i can make a terrarium to big for these creatures?

i rather spend more money and time on 1 big terrarium so my pet can have a good life than 2 normal sized ones for 2

Hey no prob! And yes I do have a Chinese water dragon, he’s my baby :)
Gargoyles are a little less handleable than cresteds and they have different tempermants. You can easily keep a pair of cresteds in a 3x3x3. They just need several hides branches vines etc, I can write up a care sheet for you if you’d like :) they can get overwhelmed in too large of am enclosure but as long as there is stuff to take up space in the tank they will be fine :)

Super! Ok! gecko is prolly gonna be it, it is my first lizard and i need to care for it so gecko might be a better choice.

Still i would like to ask.
how doable is it, for a person who cares alot about his pet and has alot of dedication, knowing its a lifetime commitment. to get a basilisk or chinese water dragon? i like both of them so much, frillnecks as well but from what i researched on them it just seems to hard to start with. changing seasons and all.
the chinese water dragon seems more handleable than the basilisk if im not mistaking. and they are both one of the most pretty lizards out there.

Chinese water dragons are by far the best lizards as far as handeling goes. They have perfect tempermants and I have never met or seen a mean one. They are very doable, as long as you are willing to build a large cage once the get about a year old. You can start with a 75 gallon, and then build a custom cage. (Or buy one) basilisk are more of a look don’t touch lizard, and frills can be a little touchy, they take longer to tame. Water dragons tame very easily and can become very attactched to their person. I find my lizard to be very affectionate towards me, and he has so much personality. They are tons of fun to watch and I love taking him on car rides and to sun outside, he even goes to schools to do seminars on reptile care at my little brother and sisters schools. They eat a ton when they are little, every day. Water dish needs cleaning daily. The water dragons forum is very active and has a ton of info if you need it, I’m always over there :) .
As far as cresties go, there are a bunch of awesome care sheets on here, in a little bit ill write one up for you. :) hope this helps you some!

Cresties need about 70-80 percent humidity, and should be provided with plenty of vines and plants to hide and climb in. They have a wide diet of crix, mealies, silkworms, fruits, and small amounts of jelly. i know some people that even feed theirs baby food. You can buy the "crested gecko diet" stuff, but i know it should be supplemented and not just used as a staple. Its kind of half and half on the whole UV lighting thing, but i did use a UV with the one that i had. Calcium dusting is a must, provided dusting with calcium D3 twice weekly and calcium without D3 for the rest of the week. They can be tamed quite easily, and come in a variaty of patterns and colors, depending on their morph (much like a leopord gecko). Temps should stay 74-80, a low watt bulb will work fine. They are more active at night, though mine is out and about during they day and night. 20 gallons is ideal for one adult gecko, so a 40 gallon would be acceptable for a pair. :) Hope this helps!!

Thx a ton for the responses guys!

I went to a pet shop to get some info as well. its a shop that works with the zoo and the animals are taken great care of.

I’m leaning towards a chinese water dragon. The handling seems to be the big + versus geckos.
i’ll stay away from basilisks as they seem to be very nervous and not the type to handle at all.
Frill necks are Aaaaweessoooome. but need very very very large enclosures as they need to be able to run alot.. more like a room instead of an enclosure, and im not sure if i can support that financialy ;) .

I’m reading up on both geckos and the chinese and will be deciding in a few months afther all the researching.
