Leopard Gecko with Watery eye/ Shrinking Tail

Wondering if anyone has any advice for us. We have had our lizard for 3 years now and had gotten him when he was small. He’s grown quite a bit and done great until recently.

His tail began to thin and we had thought about the possibility of impaction based on what we’ve read here. However, he does not have sand in his tank (reptile mat). He has had a consistant diet of meal worms and crickets (more meal worms than crickets). His location in the house has remained the same the entire time as well.

The other concern we have is that his left eye has been watery when open. Often times he will try to keep it closed. We do not see shed or any sort of object in his eye.

We feel that there is a possibility that his tail thinning is only a result of his lack of appetite due to another injury, likely his eye. Any ideas? We have seen people post about using saline in the eye with success and thought we might give that a try. Any information or suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks!!

You should visit your local herp vet. Parasites are extremely common, and usually come from the food you give (crickets especially). Pinworms are the most common parasite, but there are others out there that cause tail thinning and decreased appetite, such as coccidia. I’d find a vet out sooner than later as you don’t want your lizard starving to death.

Going to throw this in here as well, but don’t read up on parasites and think you can cure them yourself. There are different dewormers for certain worms, and one (like panacur) does not cure them all. Also, overdosing can happen. RZ will sometimes get random lizard owners that try to cure the problem, them self, instead of seeking professional help and end up with a lizard in worse condition than before.

The vet will also check out the eye. Leos don’t cry, so it could be an infection, a scratch on the lens, shed stuck up under the eyelid that you can’t see, anything. Sometimes crickets, if left in the tank indefinitely, will bite the lizard in rather tender areas. Then some lizards can be sensitive to light.

Possibly a parasite. Panacur is a good dewormer. Eye problems could be vitamin a deficiency or toxicity. I would switch vitamins to repashy super foods calcium plus. My friend did this and her geckos no longer have eye issues. Also might put Teramyacin on the eye. Repashy also has vitamin a if needed. Can be overdone though. Could also try appetite stimulants like appetite plus or jump start. Also gut load the crickets and don’t leave uneaten crickets in cage...they can pick on your gecko or eat the feces which can cause problems.
