Was quite active yesterday and was happy to eat her meal, but today she has moved a little bit and not as active as usual and wont eat her meal. Any info on this. I have had many reptiles in the past and have a little bit of know how, but this is a new challenge and theres always someone who knows more. please let me know how or what i should do. thanks.

many substrates pose a threat to most desert animals. These substrates can reach a reptiles digestive tract and can cause serious problems. not only this, but it can get into there eyes and cause infection. when finding these animals in the wild you should not use a substrate you have gathered outside because. though it may not have any pesticides, it can contain diseases. so i went with a medium grain, unbleached, undyed playground sand because it is clean and is large enough to keep out of its eyes. any other suggestions or is that something i should stay away from with horned lizards?

Could it have eaten any sand? That can be harmful.

its is most likely, but horned lizards have a tendency to eat sand when engulfing their prey. plus, the sand they engulf also aids in the breakdown of most of their food. it might be a cold, but need to look into it more. problem with a cold is its pretty hard to deal with.

let it go if is not eating horned lizards are one of the hardest lizards to keep not just because of their diet but because well they just dont do good in captivity thats why you dont see many people breeding them your best bet if you want it to survive is to let it go
good luck

If it’s wild caught may be a parasite. Try deworming with panacur. Also repashy has a vitamin with Formic acid just for ant eating species. Make sure temp is right and that the UVB bulb has been replaced with in the last 8 to12 months. Also make sure the UVB is 10.0 and no further than 20 inches from the lizard with no plastic, glass or ultra-fine mesh between the light and the lizard. Give thermal gradients so animal can choose temp with hide areas on warm and cool ends of the tank. Must supplement with calcium when using artificial lighting. Repashy super foods has the best choices for vitamins and calcium in my opinion. Could also try an appetite stimulant like jump start or appetite plus.

If you do not have proper lighting that could have something to do with the activity of your horned lizard I use mercury vapor lighting they need a LOT! Of uvb they will not do well under normal lighting for a beardie or any other common pet shop desert reptile. Also your uva needs to put out a very bright almost white basking area I have not had much luck with normal basking lighting if you are using fluorescents and a 15 dollar basking light sooner or later they will have problems over time. A diet of 90% harvester ants is best with using formical rapashy horned lizard supplement on any other insects offered for the other 10%. My regals do very well under these conditions and have bred and made it through there first clutch of babies all 7 now happy and running all over :) hope your pet made it ! Very hard species to master !
