Need hot basking area (like 110-115) and a way to cool off. I use playsand; have heard of people using Carefresh. I keep one corner of the tank moist; it is recommended that you just keep a layer on the bottom moist by inserting a plastic tube into the sand & watering through the tube, but I just pour some water in one corner. They are mainly insectivors--you should dust prey sometimes. Have also heard they will take pureed fruit or maybe it was a fruit & necter mix--I’ve never tried it. Have also heard that they will drink from a shallow dish.

Get some cool-looking but light weight tank decorations. You will not see your skinks very often & a decorated tank is more interesting to look at than a plain one, but they will move the decorations around with their burrowing , so you need to get something that will not injure them. I use a fake cat skull and some cholla pieces.

Also, be aware that sandfish available for the pet trade are wild caught specimens as no-one seems to have had much success breeding them in captivity (in case you are opposed to owning wild-caught animals)

Enjoy! It’s pretty cool to watch them pop up & grab a cricket!

I seen one on the discovery channel and it was trying to eat a baby hawk, then the sandfish and the hawk fell into the river.

they arent too hard to take care of compared to many lizards. if you have the right habitat and diet they can be quite easy to care for.

They are very easy to care for. I’ve had mine for about a year and all that I have done is, buy real desert sand, a heat rock, an under the tank heater, a water dish, 2 clamp lights, a night bulb, a sun-glo bulb, and some decorations for the tank. Just make sure you have enough sand for him/her to swim around in. Change the water every day and do a spot check cleaning every day or two. I have a strainer that I clean the sand with to get any debris out that can’t be seen. I’ve only seen mine eat crickets, but I still put mealworms and waxworms in from time to time. I have him in with two other lizards that I have seen eat the wax and mealworms. Hope this helps you decide to get one, they are soooo cool !!!!!
