allright listen up.. ALL LIZARDS REQUIRE HEAT! THATS THE WAY THEY DIGEST THEIR FOOD! their coldblooded so they cant just eat something and just stay in their cage. BUT waterdragons are cool. but they need HIGH hummididty (like 70 percent or more)

i think all lizards need a uvb light man maybe a lizard isnt the best pet for your sister, and if shez afraid of some lizards she might not really apreciate it.... if your fixed on a reptile maybe a snake would better for ya

I’ve got a corn, all he needs for heat is the under tank heater... however, if your sister is scared of a small lizard.. i’m not sure how she would react to a snake, lol.

i have a ball python, a really good and friendly guy.... but i dotn understand why you would buy you sister an animal, if she uses them for jump ropes, and is scared of some, seems like she is more ofa stuffed animal kind of girl, or wait till she grows up a little at least, she doesnt sound mature enough

i dont really think that a 12 year old should be supervising a little girl holding a lizard. An adult can but not A 12 YEAR OLd.

I understand that believe me in the past 8years of my life I’vge had about 30 animals. Most of them died because I bougvht them in really bad petshop, the others died of old agve and the ones that didn’t die I still havge. But with all this experience I still wouldn’t let a child younger than 11 touch my animals with or with adult supervision. Just due to the knowledge they have and they barely know about the animal’s weak skeletal structure and the risk of squeezing/dropping is one I won’t take.

Everyone’s being a bit rude, honing in on the fact that you’re twelve and not really answering the question...

A leopard gecko may be a good bet. They’re a bit more delicate than beardies, but are very docile. I’m not entirely sure about heating. For mine I use a UTH and a desk lamp on cold days (Making sure it doesn’t cause too much heat buildup, of course.) (I live in Texas, so it’s usually pretty warm around here.)

They usually get to be around 8 inches long or so, and can live in a ten gal (though fifteen gal is preferred) tank. Of course, this doesn’t pertain to the giant leos, which can get around 12 inches, but they’re a lot more expensive, and I don’t really know many of the specific differences in the care of regular leos vs. the care of giants.

As for feeding, keep mine on a diet of mealworms, just in a dish for her. You could also use crickets, although they’re trickier, as you have to keep a close eye on them to make sure your leo eats them or else they can start crawling all over your lizard and biting it until it has some pretty bad scale problems. (You might want to check on that info to make sure it’s right; it never happened to me, but I’ve heard of it happening, and thought maybe I should mention it.) Waxworms are a bad idea. High fat and addictive. They can be given as a treat very rarely, although I don’t even bother going to that trouble. I just keep her on the mealies. Silkies are by far some of the best food for leos, but they’re pretty expensive in relation to the other foods. Still, my stepdad used to raise a lot of different bugs in the lab he worked at (They were doing genetic experiments on mealies. Go figure.) and says that he can probably find a way for me to raise silworms myself, so yeah... They’re VERY nutritious. Back to the mealworms, they have a high amount of chitting (exoskeleton) that can cause stomach problems in some leos, though it’s never happened to me. If you’re going to feed your leo mealies, you might want to invest in the fresh-shed mealies. They’re a little more expensive, though. I just give mine all the ones that shed out of the normal ones I bought. She seems to like them more, but she still eats the others. It’s a matter of personal preference and whether or no your leo’s more prone to stomach problems, I guess. (Again, don’t take my advice by itself on this. I’m not saying I’m giving useless advice, but I’m not entirely sure it’s all correct.)

With substrate, they say the best is newspaper, but it doesn’t look very natural. I use repticarpet, though I’d like to put tile in her tank when I get her that 15 gal I’ve been saving up for. If you want to use tile, make sure it’s rough. I don’t know much about tile as substrate, so you’ll want to check with someone else for details. As for bad substrates... NEVER use sand. I was idiotica and actually kept mine on calci-sand for almost four years before I found out that was a no-no. Still, she didn’t get impacted until the week I took her off of the stuff, and thanks to the advice of a few folks in the leo forum, I got it cleared up and she’s doing better now. Still, I’ve learned my lesson, at the expense of my pet. I don’t mean to treat you like you don’t know what you’re doing, but I just have to say: NO. SAND. ESPECIALLY that calci-sand. Loose substrate in general is pretty much a no-no for leos and most other non-burrowing herps. (Check me on this.)

For cage furnishings, I have a dry hide on the warm side, and a second, humid hide on the warm side, which is simply a regular hide that I put some damp paper towels in the bottom of. (Make sure they’re damp, not wet.) I also have one hide on the cool side of her tank and a shallow water dish by that. Plus the mealworm dish, which is thrown in there in the middle. I’m going to get her calcium dish set up today. (I had to take her with me to my mom’s house for a week or so to take care of her impaction, and I forgot to bring the calcium with me, so her dish isn’t set up yet.)

My little leo:

Her tank:

Hope that helped.

Yeah thats what I ment not to insult him he sounds like he knows what hes doing so thats great not many kids in our age group care as much or know as much as him or me (even then I feel like I could learn more). But if his little sister used a snake as a jump rope I dont think shes ready to handle a lizard start her off with a hamster but even then she migvht be too young.

I agree with ya, Spic. For a 12 year old, you, CJ, sure aren’t doing a good job at watching your sis if you watched her jumprope with of your snakes. Not that I believe that’s possible, what with it either killing the snake, de-gloving it, or upsetting the snake to the point that it bites your sister. Not to mention that a snake, for it to get to ’jumprope’ size would not only be long, but heavy.

So I recommend that you not get any future reptiles. Take care of the beardie you currently own. Don’t let your sister touch it. And, should you badly want some future pet that you’d even let your sister hold, invest in a guineapig.

And never trust what petsmart says about the gender of their hamsters. I got two "females" and next thing I knew I had seven hamsters to take care of. In the end, I ended up with thirteen before I could even afford to separate them all. It was a real mess. Whenever my parents doubt my ability to take care of a large amount of small animals, I just remind them of that little fiasco. Strangely enough, it was one of the two original hamsters that lived the longest. She was a MEAN little rodent, though...

ok ok whatever we r just sayin we dont aprove of your sister holding a lizard, i think a good lizard that your sister could handle easly enough and that shouldnt bite would be a fat tailed gecko, they dont tend to leap or jump around, they r small enough for everyone to hold and still be have kewl patterns and be rewarding to have.

as for your sister i think its kewl what your doing with her im sure your a good big bro and have really good intentions. try not to get deffensive we just dont aprove of a 5 year old with any history of abusing anything holding a lizard, but if you set on it then just be careful and thats what i think you should get

and i live on a farm, when i was 5 i had a rooster that gave me a black eye, i was afraid of some animals too, but i got over it quick..... and after we ate the little bully

Yes dont let your sister touch the animals until she gets older, but as for reptiles that meet your description, many geckos meet that, you can go over and post this message in the geckos forum, you should get an answer

Did you read the post, a uro needs more than a 60 watt light. He ask about low heat reptiles. Besides a uro is not a low maintenance reptile.

You said something about bad information ruining this forum, Newtman, correct? Care to explain? Because if any of my information was bad, I would really like to know. Seriously, I’m not being sarcastic. I’m following most of that advice (’cept for the fresh-shed mealie thing) myself, and if any of it was bad, I really need to know so I can fix it. I don’t want to hurt my leo. ):

I’m sorry, that was GimliMakaio who said that. Newtman was the one who made me feel like an idiot for not being able to sex rodents when I was seven years old. As for that... What can I say? I’m bad with rodents. That’s why I don’t keep them anymore.
