I apologize for the offtopic-ness but this is a survey that would really help me

This isn’t lizard related but I’m trying to get a good cross section of views and the random forum doesn’t seem to be too popular. For my thesis I’m studying the affects of body modifications (piercings, tattoos, brandings etc.) and would really appreciate it if you could fill this out. If you would like to leave parts blank feel free.

Name (first name & last initial):
Age:
Occupation:
Do you have any body mods?

If so : why did you get them?
Do they affect your life socially?
Have you/do you have trouble aquiring a job because
of them?
Do you get wierd looks or lack of respect because of them?
Have they made your life better in any ways? how?
Do you get treated different now than before you had them?

If not: Why do you not have any?
Do you have any intention/desire to get them?

Do you have friends with them?
Do others with modifications affect the way you life your life (ie: prefering or avoiding stores with modified workers, feel uncomfortable/more comfortable around those who are modified)?
Do you feel diffrently about different mods? Maybe more accepting of "normal" piercings (ears) compared to "unusual ones" (surface) or more accepting of tattoos to brandings or scarifications?

Overall, do you believe mods have had a positive, negative or neutral affect on your life?
Overall, do you believe mods have had a positive, negative or neutral affect on society?

*names are just for citing and referring purposes.

Thanks so much.

Body mods? No

Why don’t I have any?
Piercings, to much unnecessary and unwanted pain (I get enough holes and scratchs on my skin from my animals). Tatoos, Don’t like the idea of my body being permanently marked by a tatoo as they aren’t exactly easily removed. Modifications like breast implants, totally unnecessary. I appreciate the body God gave me and am quite happy with it.

Do I have friends with them?
Yes

Do others with modificatoins affect the way I live my life? Not really. I do tend to freak a bit when i encounter people that are covered in tatoos and have body piercings all over, but i always give them a chance to proove that they aren’t at all like society makes them out to be. And once i get to know them and they aren’t a bad person, i’m comfortable with them.

Do I feel differently about different mods?
Yes. I’m ok with piercings and tatoos for the most part. But breast implants and lipo disgust me the most. Once again, I think that people should appreciate the body they have. You don’t have to be some super skinny model for people to like you and lets face it, very few people have that kind of body. For the most part, women that have had obvious breast enlargements loose alot of my respect.

Overall, do I believe mods have had a positive, negative or neutral affect on my life?
I’d say neutral for most mods except breast enlargement and lipo.

Over all, do I believe mods have had a positive, negative or neutral affect on society?
Negative. Now that people can change their body at will, people are more judgemental. Like, because you now have the option to do it but choose not to, the rest of society scorns you and I think thats just wrong. And with lipo, i think it encourages laziness. Fat can easily be burned and kept off if people would diet and exercise. But now with lipo as an option, people can eat like a pig and get fat then just go to a doctor and have it all sucked out. If it didn’t get so out of hand in the first place, there wouldn’t be any need for lipo.

 Hey, I’ll go for it..

Name (first name & last initial): Heather L
Age: 20
Occupation: Waitress
Do you have any body mods? two tattoos, 16 piercings

If so : why did you get them? The tatts I got to accent my body. The piercings are something I just really enjoy the look of, and they fit my style. :)
Do they affect your life socially? I’ve been very cautious about the types and placements of body mods I get, because of the social aspect. I’m very involved in horses and horse shows, and it’s a very conservative group. So mostly if I’m not showing them off, they’re not too noticable.
Have you/do you have trouble aquiring a job because
of them? I haven’t run into any problems yet. My tattoos aren’t visible in work attire, and the only facial piercings I have are nose and tongue, if that counts as a facial piercing.. :) My nose stud is a small diamond, and although ’facial piercings are not allowed’ at my place of employ, it’s small and tasteful enough that they let it go.
Do you get wierd looks or lack of respect because of them? No
Have they made your life better in any ways? how? I enjoy having accents to my body. They’ve made me more confident in some ways because of that.. They make me like my apperence more.
Do you get treated different now than before you had them? No, other then the occasional comment when people like them.

If not: Why do you not have any?
Do you have any intention/desire to get them?

Do you have friends with them? Many of my friends have tatts, and almost all have some sort of piercing.
Do others with modifications affect the way you life your life (ie: prefering or avoiding stores with modified workers, feel uncomfortable/more comfortable around those who are modified)? Yes. There are certain situations, such as at horse shows, that I can’t bring or invite some friends of mine to because of their outward apperence and how it reflects on me. It’s hard for me to deal with that, because I don’t like feeling ’shallow’ that way. But respect in the horse world is hard to get and easy to lose, and I can’t chance it.
Do you feel diffrently about different mods? Maybe more accepting of "normal" piercings (ears) compared to "unusual ones" (surface) or more accepting of tattoos to brandings or scarifications? To me, they are all just as ’extreme’ as any other. I don’t see scarification, for example, as being any more extreme then a tattoo. What really makes the difference is the statement the person with it is trying to make. Scarification and surface piercings can be beautiful and tasteful, and a graphic tattoo on someones forearm or ear plugs with obscene sayings can be repelling. It all depends on the message that the person wants to put out.

Overall, do you believe mods have had a positive, negative or neutral affect on your life? I would have to say positive, because of the enjoyment and confidence I get from my own, and the ’conversation starters’ of other peoples.
Overall, do you believe mods have had a positive, negative or neutral affect on society? I really don’t feel that they’ve really had any kind of positive or negative affect on society as a whole. I wouldn’t say that they’ve had a no effect, or a neutral effect, either. Body modification has been around for a very long time in many different forms, and it’s always served as a personal statement of something. On that level, it’s had an effect as a status symbol, political symbol, and sexual symbol. But body modification itself doesn’t make the influence, it just makes a statement to the rest of society about the influence of the individual’s own standing.

(if you would like to know the types of piercings and tatts I have, pm me and I can explain more) :) Hope that helped.
