What type O lizard I keep my female in a 40 gal. breeder. I use about 3" of sand in the bottom and a few plastic plants for decoration. I have a few flat rocks for her to bask on and a nice piece of driftwood to climb on. My newest addition arrived today and it is in a 20 gal. long. In captivity they do not require a lot of room because there is no need for them to have to hunt down their food. I’m sure some people will argue with me on that one but I’m just speaking from my own experience. I wouldn’t go any smaller than a 20 long though because their basking area needs to be between 100-110 degrees and in a smaller cage you will have no cool spot for them to go to. To be honest though, my lizard spends very little time in her cool end. Even at night she will sleep on the warm end, of course by that time there is no heat except what is retained in the rocks. She likes to dig a cave under her rocks and sleep in there. She also closes the door on her cave so that you might think she somehow got out but she is just hidden. I dampen the sand and then let the lights bake it so that it holds together nicely when she digs. I have a small cage that I take her outside in so that she can get some natural sunlight and I also use UV lighing on her cage. Because they are a desert species, it’s very important that they get plenty of sunlight whether it’s artificial or real. I also believe every lizard needs calcium supplements. I’ve seen too many cases of MBD to skimp on that. Her main diet is crickets. I don’t count how many she eats, I just throw about a dozen in every day. She doesn’t always eat them though, sometimes I find them later under her rocks. I have found that worms are not her thing. She doesn’t care for them and I’ve tried them all. She loves grasshoppers when I can get them and I will give her an anole about once or twice a month. I’ve tried pinkies with no luck but I’ve heard they will eat them occasionally. They do not require water but will occasionally drink off the glass if you mist it. I have even gotten her to drink from a syringe a few times. They hate being sprayed with water so don’t mist them directly just the sides of the tank. For the most part they get their water from their food. Keep your crickets hydrated and your lizard will get enough from them. They are very easy to care for and very friendly lizards. Even the new one that I got today only hissed at me once. LOL it turned out to be another she though so the hunt for a male is still on. She looked at me funny lunged like she would bite and then sat calmly while I held her. I turned her this way and that trying to determine if it was male or female and she was as calm as could be the whole time. Unfortunately it is a female. Oh well, now I will have 2 females to breed next spring instead of one.I have found another site that sells them though and he assures me he has plenty of males. This time I won’t take any chances. I will email the guy pics of the differences between males and females. The other guy wouldn’t guarantee sex because he didn’t know what to look for. I hope I have answered your questions and if not feel free to ask more. I will be happy to share whatever I have learned about them. Good luck in your search, I hope you find an animal you can be happy with.
