 Finally I got a snake

So after about 6 months of waiting to get a snake I finally got one. It’s a garter or ribbon snake it said. I just went to Sporting Goods and found a Petco nearby. I already knew how to take care of snakes, but I didn’t think I’d get one today. Since I missed the November reptile expo and February one I didn’t want to wait until May again. I haven’t handled him yet because I want him to get used to his cage first. He’s a foot and a half so any estimates on how old he is I was thinking around 10 months. If you have any name suggestions you can tell me.

Chammy man I still haven’t seen your garter? Oh and btw I’m gonna pick up some plywood and make a snake rack or a turtle cage :D..... it seems like your snake could be anywhere from 5-10 months but that’s just guessing on the rate of growth for corns so lol

Congrats. I had an albino checkered garter snake that just died. We had a brown northern die a few days before she did. We are pretty sure it had to be the earthworms we were giving them. She was completly healthy a few days before she died. Sad thing is I had just switched garter over to pinkies but she could only handle the newborn ones which I was out of so gave her the earthworm to tide her over. I did not realize that earthworms from bait shops can have pesticides. So if your snake is on worms be careful where you get them.

I’ve been feeding mine earthworms and feeder guppies. Since Champ (because my dog’s name is Bailey if you like the Denver Broncos you get why I named him that) is 1 1/2 is he big enough to be fed pinkie mice.

Chameleon_man, getting worms from outsude is even riskier...who knows what they use for presticides in a neighborhood. Remember, if a neighbor uses it, chances are the critters in your yard carry traces.

Good luck!

I tried feeder guppies and rosy reds. If he doesn’t eat them or anything else I’ll just return him and get a different garter snake.

Nevermind guys he ate a rosy red yesterday so I’ll just have to buy him more. How many rosy reds a week do you think are best for him?

I have a strange idea and was wondering if it might work. Did any of you ever think about trying to grow grass in a living vivarium. Would you have to fertilize it though is my question because I know fertilizer is bad for most animals to eat?

i would definitely do some recherché on that before planting grass. I know some grass is dangerous for animals. i feed my garter snake as many as he will eat in a week. (he normally eats about 6-10 a week)
