It might have some infection caused by too much rubbing on the glass surface. Glass it’s always problematic for some species. You might check his mouth for bad smell or pus. Check the temperature, humidity and maybe try to put some hiding boxes. A simple opinion. All the best!

Birdcages are worse. Anything that it thinks it can get out of is bad, because it will keep trying to get out.
I don’t know anything about this particular species, but what generally works for nervous animals is to put stuff around the bottom of the tank. Just tape some paper or something there, preferably green, so he feels like he’s surrounded by a natural barrier instead of something that he ought to be able to run right through. If he climbs a lot, put a bunch of plants in there (it’s even OK if they’re fake) so even when he’s up higher he has some stuff around him. But with most species, the hardest nose rubs will happen when they’re on the ground, so that’s what you really want to block off. You can leave some little holes or slits to peek through and look at him close up through if you want, but nothing big enough that he’ll think he can fit through it.

Your Bronchocela cristatella definitely needs some moisture absorbing substrate to boost the humidity, something to climb on (they are arboreal) and concealment in the form of live plants/artificial plants but something to shield it from observation. They are prone to stress, and if they feel they are not being watched, they will feel more comfortable. They are rather delicate lizards to keep, even if you live where they are from, like me. They are display lizards and not especially good display animals, because they do not like being watched. They are not something to be handled. Something to line the inside of the enclosure would help also, so it will not rub its nose on the glass. If you do all the above quickly, it might still make it.

I have come across them on herpetological surveys in the field and they have died as quickly as one day after being captured (because of stress); this is not at all normal. This is not a lizard to be kept by the inexperienced and if you want to keep them alive, you really need to learn as much as you can about them and how to take care of them quickly.

Here is a large adult male I found in southern Thailand last month:

It rapidly changed to black from bright green and blue to match the background and probably from the stress of close interaction.

Cheers,
Michael

Since it is almost 3 weeks now, I am guessing that they did not make it?

The reason that you do not see them is because they are usually dead before they even get to the US. This is a species that is very fragile and should not be considered. Being locked up and pestered at a weekend reptile show is quite enough to kill them. The one pictured in my post above was dead before even coming out of the field along with another one that was not pictured!

Do people look through their books on reptiles and use them as some kind of catalogue? It appears no one looks into how to take care of them or how difficult they are to keep before buying one.

Just for clarification:
The Bronchocela cristatella were collected as locality specimens for Thailand’s national collection, so they were valuable whether they were dead or alive. The nicer specimens are often kept alive in captivity and then preserved in the national collection after they die.
