Are Agamas Easy to Care For?

I was wondering what the requirements are to have a happy Agama? Could 2 be housed happily in a 4’x2’x18"? Do they mind being handled once in a while? HTanks a lot

Are Agamas Easy to Care For?

It depends on what type.I have a male and female starred agama and they’re fine in a ten gallon tank.I hold them everyday and they’re not stressed. They like a calcium sand substrate or a reptile carpet from zoo med.
They eat crickets but you can give them waxworms or supermealworms every other week for a treat since they’re high in fat.You should also coat their food in calcium supplements and if you’re going to give them mealworms or waxworms you should put them in a shallow dish with calcium powder since it doesn’t stick well to their bodies.Make sure the dish is deep enough so that the mealworms can’t get out or they might start nibbling on your lizard. As for feeding, it depends on the lizard. Some agamas will only eat 2-4 crickets a day or some will eat 8-a dozen.
You also need a UVB light and a basking light. For a ten gallon the basking light should probably be about 60 watt depending on how close to the cage it is.
Agamas also like to burrow so a foam burrow would be a good treat for them and you can watch them hide in it.
You need to spray the side of the tank at least twice a day or at least until they get used to drinking from a water dish.Even if they do start drinking from a water dish it’s still good to spray for the humidity though it shouldn’t be very high since they’re desert lizards mainly.
Female agamas usually lay a clutch of eggs in June which hatch around August so they are easy breeders also.
If you need any more information you should contact a local reptile shop owner or a herpetologist.I hope that helps. :)
