 Help identifying this agama

i have been told they are from egypt and the were sold as savigneys agamas
i havent found anything at all on the internet or in books re savigneys
has anyone a clue as to what they are? i am in uk and am keeping them in a typical desert set up viv hot spot 100 cool spot 78 plus there is shade if required night temp falls to 70
they dont do a lot and like to play dead
any tips etc would be most greatfully received as this is my first attempt at keeping lizards.
top two pics are the male and bottom two the female or so i have been told
they are both exactly the same size and are approx 9 inches from nose to tail. i would call them small as their tails are 4 and a half inches long

Hey Jazz Man ( Al Jolson ), I Googled a while this morning and you’re right. I couldn’t track down SAVIGNEYS. There are lots of sites though under Reptiles of Egypt or Egyptian Lizards or Agamids in Egypt. I didn’t have time to search them all. Your pair, show a resemblance to my Spiny Tailed Agamas from NE Africa. Broaden your search to neighboring countries for more results. Also check the spelling on the name the Pet Store gave you, maybe it’s not quite right. I keep my Spinosa at tropical temps and 45% humidity. They seem to like it more than Desert setting. Some Agamas are strictly Desert Lizards though. I still have a basking area for them at 100 degrees. Sorry I couldn’t help more. Keep us informed.

what you have there are know as the red headed agama, agama agama, or many other various names including the rainbow lizard (due to the males ability to change colors) they come from the same family as bearded dragons called AGAMIDAE. there home range is Africa; southwestern to central Asia. They like desert to semi dry areas bordering forest edges, rocky steppes, and sand deserts.
Temp should range 80 to 90 in basking area and between 85 to 70 in cool area of there home. at night temp should not drop below 75 in warm area of tank.
A small dish of water is enough, changed daily, humidity should be low. A warm mist of water will be desired during shedding of skin, it is important to make sure the shed is all removed.
You should do a complete study on these guys, even tho they are not hard to keep. feel free to contact me if you need any more information or to see pictures of mine. You are lucky to own such great reptiles. They are rare.

thanks for replyelliot elle. i would love to see pics of your red headed agamas. since taking ownership of these they have become a lot more interesting, the male does indeed change colour from a yellow to a dark colour. the female now eats from your fiingers but has a very painful nip and she holds on!!! a few times she has been flung around as you pull your hand away in shock. while picking her up she takes a bite and holds on. but she has character. the male however is placid and lets you pick him up and likes been shown the aquarium. he would watch the fish swim by all day. we have a pool of water but ive never once seen them use it or drink from their water dispenser. i have a y shaped log that reaches the top of the vivarium and they both love to climb to the very top and doze. they are very interesting now and very rarely play dead.
just a bit concerned about their lack of drinking!
cheers
al

just done a search and im not sure these are red heads because the male doesnt change colour anywhere near as much as the red headed with blue body. under his head goes blue-gray and that is all.
or is he maybe still immature?
cheers

Yeah Ell.... , I have a tendency to agree with Al..... . I don’t think these are Red Headeds. I’ve seen a few pairs at different ages and haven’t seen them look like this.

kelly b, what you have is a pale agama. same as the starter of this post. a blue headed agama is just that blue headed. its whole head is blue not just its throat. it has the same body shape but in no way the same color. many people sell agamas to unknowing people that dont know what species it is so the seller just makes one up. this is a blue headed agama here and this is what you have a pale agama

The agama in your pics is a Spiny agama, it is definitely not a red-headed agama. We have both of these species, so therefore know the difference.
