 Biting . .

I just found an aligator lizard and I read on here that they bite pretty badly. Do you think since mine’s still little that if I tamed it, it wouldn’t bite later on when it got bigger?

How much should you feed an alligator lizard a day? Will they over feed themselves or only eat as much as they need? I feed mine 3 meal worms this morning and he ate them all. Some advice please?

 Biting . .

With alligator lizards, you have to hold them gently, its best not to put pressure on them, instead, allow them to crawl on you, place your hand gently under the neck and tip the head up. If done correctly, the lizard will instinctively climb on your hand. Try not to secure the lizard, as it may defecate on you, which is their method of discouraging predators.. sorta like a skunk. Never lift the shelter off of it, as this startles the living crap out of them. When alligator lizards get po’ed, they sorta puff their bodies up. Thats the first sign they are feeling threatened. When breeding conditions are appropriate, males are very aggressive, and will bite repeatedly, not just the simple clamping. I had one that was very tame, and would take food from my hands even when being held firmly. He was raised from a brood back in ’05 and was the calmest of the bunch. He surprised me in spring when i was cleaning his cage, as usually i just let him roam the desk while i clean it.. Well things were going fine until he saw me touching his rock, and he snapped the daylights outta my pinkie.

Lizards are never completely tame. They are wild animals and are unpredictable. As are any other living things.

If you tame your lizard, it shouldn’t bite, but you never know. Don’t tease or startle the poor creature, his only defense is his jaws. It might bite you, but it probably wont.

Put a cricket in front of it, and it should eat that quickly. If it wont, attach the cricket to a strand of hair or transparent string, and dangle it in front of its face. If it doesn’t snatch it up quickly, the lizard is not hungry.

i caught my alligator lizard in the wild and surprisingly it has never bit me or shown any signs of aggression.
from what i have gathered, once you create a steady schedule for feeding and what i call socialization, they become more calm.but all reptiles differ in their behavior from time to time. i have two children and they love to hold my alli and once again, has never shown ANY aggression. i think it is all in the way that you handle and comfort the creature.

actually, if the lizard is feeling threatend, then it will not eat. wait for it to settle down and try Gilpgulp’s message again. We are close freinds and this is a proven method
