Help with my lizard care? please? :)
Anyway... the lizards are starting to come back out of hiding in the winter, and I wanted to check and make sure I have everything right before I catch one. I have: -20 gallon acrylic tank -water/food dish -heat lamp(uses regular household lamp bulbs) -climbing artifiacial tree branch -wetted moss/dirt (it comes in a brick, and you soak it in water and it expands) -mealworms/crickets -A thick glove ^^; the only thing I am concerned about is the UVA/UVB bulb. I don’t have one. I have a red lamp that I used for my snake, but it gets really, really hot (like 90-100 degrees). Could someone please show me a link to the prouct from petco/petsmart? Also, I don’t have any supplements, so a link to that as well would be great ;) Anything else I need? thanks! :) -Nicole |

http://www.petsmart.com/product/index.jsp?productId=2754048&cp=2767037.2769289&pg=2&fbn=Taxonomy%7CSupplements+%26+Medications&f=Taxonomy%2FPET%2F2769289&fbc=1&parentPage=family&keepsr=1 I like these fixtures and they come with a bulb: ESU Reptile Slimline Light Fixture with 18" Super UV Lamp http://www.petsmart.com/product/index.jsp?productId=2753220&cp=2767037.2862253&pg=2&fbn=Taxonomy%7CHeating+%26+Lighting&f=Taxonomy%2FPET%2F2862253&fbc=1&parentPage=family&keepsr=1 When the UV bulb that comes in the fixture goes, I replace it with one of the Zoo Med 5.0 Reptisuns: http://www.petsmart.com/product/index.jsp?productId=2752656&cp=2767037.2862253&view=all&pg=2&fbn=Taxonomy%7CHeating+%26+Lighting&f=Taxonomy%2FPET%2F2862253&fbc=1&parentPage=family&keepsr=1 I’d go cricket only for the diet, mealworms are too fatty. Remember that you’re making a big commitment. Your alligator lizards could be with you for the next 10 years and it’s illegal to release captives. |

Get some clean play sand(no calci-sand) to mix in with the dirt. Try a 50/50 mix. They are ground dwelling lizards. Get lots of rocks and logs for him. Some leaf littler would be nice too. He will really appreciate it, trust me. If collected from your yard, make sure you bake everything at 350 degrees. For UVB. get reptisun 10.0 from bigappleherp.com. I just got my shipment of UVB bulbs for my BDs and they were great. One of the pins was a little messed up but easily fixed with pliers. Be sure to change the bulb every 6 months. For supplements I suggest jurrassical pure calcium(2-3 time every other week), rep-cal with D3(2-3 times weekly) and herptivite(once weekly). Here is my tank that is for a young male. Since the picture was taken I’ve added in more/larger leaf litter and I’ve covered all the sides but the front with black paper.

is this the setup same for fence lizards? Those are the two species I would be catching this season. I know they need more climbing branches than aligator lizards though. |

With both, you may want to set up a quarantine cage before you move them into their permanent cages. Mites are a pretty common problem and it’s important to spot them early. With wild caught fence lizards and als, I’ll lightly coat the lizard with vegetable oil (stay away from the eyes and nose) to smother any mites that might be present. At this time the cage has bare essentials (water dish, basking light, disposable hide/paper towel roll, and paper towel for substrate). I keep them this way until I’m satisfied they’re mite free, usually 2-3 weeks.
