I know a lot about other reptiles but not this one....im just wondering if they are sold in america...if they are hard to find?! because everyone seems to have wild ones?! They look like plated lizards...or at least the pic.s on a few threads did. ~Kc Lynn

They are legal to sell, it just depends where you are and where the seller is.

In California, both Elgaria multicarinata, southern alligator lizards, and Elgaria coerulea, the northern alligator lizard are illegal to sell or export commercially. I’m pretty sure the same is true for Oregon and Washington where they are also native.

The northerns range into Idaho which appears to allow commercial sale of wildcaught animals and they’re available with some regularity.

There is an introduced population of southern alligator lizards in the Las Vegas area and Nevada allows commercial collection. And, I did once see some offered for sale.

If someone were to buy an out of state fishing license, collect a pair in California and take them to their homestate, they could also legally sell the offspring.

I’ve seen captive bred Texas alligator lizards for sale somewhat regularly and there was even an article in Reptiles Magazine last year dealing with them.

Madreans would be illegal to sell in Arizona or New Mexico, but can be legally collected in Arizona by out of staters with an out of state hunting license. On very rare occasions there guys will also pop up for sale captive bred or from out of state collectors etc.

My two wc southerns are tame. One I had to work with, the other is a bit of a freak in that he’s always been tame since day one. I’ve had him for over five years now and I use him in a lot of the educational presentations I give. All of the babies I’ve ever hatched have been very tame. With captive hatched babies, just messing around in their cage regularly, occasional hand feeding, and offering of special treats while they’re sitting in your hand has always been enough to get them well acclimated to handling.

My northerns are very high strung, but I haven’t made any effort to get them used to handling. They will, however, take food from my hand and get very excited when they see the cricket bag. Both were wild caught as adults.

My wild caught pair of madreans won’t have anything to do with me and hide if they see me looking too closely at them. I have seven babies that I hatched out from them last summer, they’re much tamer, but jumpier than the southerns. They don’t panic while being held, will take food from my hand and in hand but will take a flying leap if given the chance. I think that if I worked with them more, they could easily be tamed down even more.

I don’t have any experience with Texas als yet, but I’d like to get a few when I have more room.

One really nice thing about baby alligator lizards is that they are very bold despite their small size. I had one of my madreans hatch out with something resembling mild metabolic bone disease and he was unable to feed on his own. I was able to pick him up, set him on the palm of my hand and offer him pre-killed smashed crickets. He took them readily and within two weeks had gained the jaw strength to catch and kill his own crickets. I also had a clutch of Slevin’s bunchgrass lizards hatch that same summer, two of the babies were weak and unable to catch their own food, any attempt to intervene (offer food on forceps, or by hand) completely panicked them and I lost them both. I think this innate boldness makes the als very rewarding to work with.
