How to get ready for texas alligator lizards to breed I’ll usually set them in it and close the lid and block the door with some wadded paper toweling for a few minutes. Then I’ll remove the toweling and let them go in and out as they please. This kind of forces them to try it out and realize that this is a good place for egg laying since they may be initially reluctant to enter this strange "cave" which has suddenly appeared. If you make sure the substrate in the rest of the tank is completely dry and the substrate in the lay box is moist, they’ll almost always lay their eggs in the box.
