New cage setup -- is it OK?

Hi ppls! I have just recently set up a cage for my southern alli, and I was wondering what y’all thought of it. I’ll post a new pic of it in a bit. The substrate is shredded bark, and it’s mostly dust free. Cottonwood (a type of aspen) shelters, and I’m not totally sure what the plants are. Does anyone know of any poisonous plants to allis? Name them if you know, I would realy appreciate it! Here’s some pix of the southern, he (she?) is just a juvi.

This is the whole cage.

And that’s the back of it behind the bark. Is the whole thing too"woodsy"? Do they need more open space and room? My alli really doesn’t run around all that much, she(he?) just hides a lot and basks. Are the plants OK? Just a type of ferns, and I’m not sure what the other 2 are. I know they don’t eat plants so is it ok if they’re in there? I’m pretty sure they aren’t poisonous. PLEASE REPLY! I need to know this stuff.

yo what up...that looks really good but i prefer the shredded barks to be mixed with alittle bit of soil because its more confortable and they will be able to burry them selves in it..i have a northern so it may be different but i bet southerns are too.... :)

The alligator section of this forum is very slow due to lack of people who actually own them. Please be patient with replies, and if you have an emergency go to the general lizard section.

I have to agree with the other poster, you should look into some type of soil substrate either mixed in or on its own. Your allie will like it more and you should have an easier time keeping your humidity up.

Okay I will definitley look into that thanks! Also, does he have enough room? I mean like how crowded it is with all the bark hides and stuff. Allies aren’t all that active i’ve noticed. When He gets bigger I can get a bigger tank, but right now he’s only about 4" (svl). Thank you guys for posting, I really appreciate it. :)

Well I just redid his tank with the coconut mulch from petco, and he seems to like it. He slowly walked all around the cage sniffing at the new bedding when I put him back in. And then just sat on top of the bark shelter like he’d been there for weeks. Here’s some pictures, see what you think of it!

That looks a lot better! Great job.

Your tank looks rather large. What size is it? Dimensions?

11.2 gallons, after I’ve done a bit of math that I haven’t done in a VERY long time. (Oh no, my mind has been numbed by Algebra! Ahhh!) The dimensions are 9" tall, 24" long, and 12" wide. I believe the camera distorts the image a bit because the tank is so long and short. I have never seen another tank shaped quite like it, but I like the extra floor space for ground dwelling animals. I have had a tarantula in the tank before him and it suited him quite well also.

I don’t think a new tank is needed, but it would be worth it if you did upgrade. Look into a 20 long if you get a new tank.

Okay, I will keep that in mind. I thought the tank was smaller until I did the math, and it surprised me. I think that the coconut mulch and the live plants do a lot for the humidity. I should probably invest in a hygrometer. I caught the lizard in my backyard, and being in the desert there isn’t much humidity. Allies around here hide during most of the summer days. Apparently they don’t like 105 degrees. It’s quite a change from the fence lizards I used to keep.

Alligator lizards aren’t from dessert areas. They are mostly from chaparral areas which are actually quite humid despite looking like a dessert. Humidity is a must for allies, without it they can have really bad sheds. Since they shed all at once, its important that they are able to completely remove it. Pieces that get stuck may cause constriction.

105 degrees is too warm. I would say 95 max in the basking spot.

Oh I didn’t mean in the tank, that’s the outside temperature at my house in the summer. That is cruel, cooking a lizard like that. Yes, I live in the desert, and I find them outside actually quite often. They do like to stick around near the foundation of the house though. Ambient humidity around here in the summer is about 7%, and I agree with you, they defintiely need moisture.

Los Angeles but at the very northern part of it near Kern county. By Lancaster/Mojave, if you’re looking at cities. Yes it is scrub and desert. High desert. There’s a mountain range separating it from the milder climates from the ocean, so it’s windier and hotter in the summertime.

thank you...there aren’t many differences between southerns and northerns..exept northerns are more rare and can only be found between canada of bc and alberta in the north forests...but southerns are every where ..in the backyard..and all over the forests in the states...
