Shedding What kind of signs should I be on the look out for when it comes to an allie getting ready to shed its skin? My little boy is starting to get some scales on the top of his head that are looking kind of translucent, is this a sign of impending shedding? Since they don’t have a lens cap like snakes do I’m not sure how obvious the signs are for an impending skin shed. I have been collecting some rocks to bake and put in his cage so that he has something to rub up against when it is time to shed (he’s grown close to half an inch since we caught him two weeks ago, so I figured he’d start shedding soon). Also, how frequently do allies shed their skin? Is it every 3-4 months like a snake or more or less frequently than that? My Oscar is still young, so I’m assuming that there’s still some growth left in him between now and when he gets his adult colouration.

Shedding There is usually a color change prior to a shed. Brown als will tend to get darker and reds and yellows will get a washed out faded look. I try to increase the humidity when I see a shed coming on by spraying down the tank and overfilling the water bowl. After a shed I do a tail and toe check to make sure they got it all off. Even young als are not real frequent shedders. I haven’t really tracked shed rates in mine, but I’d guesstimate shedding every 1-2 months for the youngsters and every 3-4 months for the adults.

Shedding My Alli is getting what look like white bubbles on the top of his head. I need to know if that is natural for shedding or if this is a real problem. Pictures to follow.
