Not sure what gender i have

had it for a little over a year, caught in central washington, in a sagebrush desert area of naches/selah in an outside vent at a house we were working at in summer ’08.

this year we found a little one in the same exact vent but didnt make the long ride home which was a major bummer :(

(i was thinking if mines a female that was maybe its offspring?)

in summer of ’08 i didnt have a lamp for it, just had it in a cheap cage, then when i was getting crickets one day the store owner was trying to get rid of a cage+lamp and sold me a big 50+ gallon tank + heat/uv lamp for $50 so i took it, now it has its lamp for awhile and it seems to like it ;)

if anyone can make a pic to show differences and maybe use a photo editor to like put arrows and text to show what to look for to find gender would be great.

its 12 inches long (nose to tip of tail)

i have heard that they can lay up to three, but some sources will say only one???? but i have a pair that mated and laid eggs in early march but they havent had another clutch since then, but yours is prob a northern that would give live birth which is prob alot easier since sometimes keeping the eggs alive can be difficult

Not sure what gender i have

thanks for the info

i have been looking at some google images and southern/northern look really similar to me. i thought mine was southern since most the the northern pics had a much different scale pattern

possibly just people mis-tag the pic and think its northern because they are in washington and southern because they are in cali

i dont know :(

Not sure what gender i have

How big is it???
Northern is most likely to be about 6 inches and under..
Southern is about 7 inches and up....

P.S If you caught it tell me where if not, that’s OK....Its just easier 2 tell

OH! hehe sorry it says @ the top...I missed that....
YA its most likely southern because of how long it is....
Shes a nice lizard and totally worth keeping!

P.S you should try doing some inter net surfing to find other things about her!

some one (on another site) told me about a HERP license just to have one of these let alone try to breed them.

i cant find any info about it for Washington, or even a law against having/breeding these.

whats this about?

not sure about other states but i know for california technically you are supposed to have a fishing license if you want to go out and catch one and i think 2 is the limit!, and if you want to keep more than that or breed them you have to get a special permit. and since the alligator lizard is native to california that is why you will never see a alligator lizard for sale in a petshop in cali if its native to california then its protected. but im sure you can buy them in other states

i usually always have a fishing license so i guess i didnt break that rule, but to be honest i do have more than two, four to be exact, and i did end up breeding a pair this spring but i gave away all the babies except one, and i dont have a special permit, i have never heard of anyone getting in trouble for ever catching a alligator lizard i think the only thing law enforce ment would care about is if you were trying to make money off selling them.
