buy the smallest crickets possible, and it should love those, for a baby alligator liz a ten gallon fish tank is perfect! but once it gets bigger you should at least get a 20, they can swim but it shouldnt have to in captivity but it does need a water source just a small water bowl will do just get some dirt substrate, they have it at the petstore and put in a bunch of rocks branches and plants i got mine all from the pet store but if you cant do that you can get it from outside but you got to make sure there are no bugs or mites,

thats just the baisic stuff but if you really want to keep it for good then you got to get some uvb lights for it and prob a heat lamp to make one end of the cage a high temp for it to bask and when you feed it crickets you got to sprinkle calcium dust on the crickets this will help the lizard stay healthy and strong so it can live as long as it was meant too if not it might only live a year or so

if you look on the care sheets on this forum or other reptile sites you can prob find all the info you need, but if you still are stuck on something then ask away

here is my old 20 gallon that i had for two alligator lizards but now i bumped up to a 60 gallon which houses my four allies very comfortably

is it in a five gallon tank or a fifty five gallon tank??, if its in a five gallon then thats def too small, sound like the allie is still young especially if it has its full tail and will prob get alot bigger over the next year or two, a 20 gallon would be great for one or maybe two allies, i got my 20 gallong pretty cheap at pets mart for less than 30 bucks!
