how big of a tank do you need to breed allies? how do you tell if they’re male or female? how big/old do they need to be to breed? and finally do you need anything special for them to breed or lay eggs? thanks |

Males and females are VERY hard to tell apart. Females evert structures that look a lot like hemipenes. You know for sure when you see them breed (the male initiates it). They will breed at a little over 3" snout to vent (not counting the tail). If fed as much as they will eat they can reach this size 18 months after hatching. A hibernation period is helpful in getting them to breed. Cool them into the high 50’s/low 60’s F for at least 2 months in winter; leave them alone and don’t feed them during this time. You can extend this to 4 months if convenient. Males produce sperm in the fall and mate in early spring; double or triple clutches are the result of females storing sperm and using it multiple times and not the result of multiple matings. If no mating has taken place by late spring then you likely missed the window for that year. With most reptiles feeding the male too much and making him fat may cause him to loose interest in breeding. Separating the male from the female except during the breeding period may also be helpful. You will need to set up an egg laying chamber - a plastic container full of damp moss or damp towel. Otherwise the female will get frustrated and finally lay her eggs where ever; they will likely dry up before you see them. Because gator lizard eggs are small they dry up faster than say snake eggs or leopard gecko eggs. There’s nothing worse than finally succeeding and then loosing a clutch of eggs. |

The "fake hemipenes" on females look like a pair of little "sticks" that pop out and may be accompanied by a tiny bit of bleeding, just as when males evert hemipenes. They lack any sort of structure or texture. |
