 Finally! Eggs!

Finally found eggs. What worked was placing the containers of vermiculite down into leaf-litter and putting a terra cotta clay dish over the top with just enough room for mom to crawl under it. Got the idea from Bert Langerwerf who wrote that they like to lay their eggs in depressions beneath flat rocks. I noticed that she got very aggressive recently - probably a sign that she has already laid her eggs and is now protecting them.

 Finally! Eggs!

Fantastic! Good luck with them. About 60 days at 80F plus or minus a few. Check the media frequently - if it dries out those things are so small you only have one or two days to catch it before THEY dry out.

 Finally! Eggs!

Congrat’s Red Gator! long time no see! well on my part aleast, ive kinda stopped going on here for a while, i just got 10 eggs from one of my females a couple weeks ago, thinking early august they should hatch!

ohh and its weird, ive showed u pics of my red allie before (i think) but for a while i was dead sure it was a female, but now i think its a male!!!? the head is not as triangle or huge like my other males, but the body is very big and long, and it will protrude the two reproductive organs, which i guess kinda seals the deal that i have a male red allie i guess. wierd. i have been having troulble with pics on here lately but ill try to post new ones.

good luck with the eggs!!

 Finally! Eggs!

FYI - females evert two stick-like things that most people mistake for hemipenes. The hemipenes of a male are more textured.
And Red Gator - I’m sure you know but be aware that gator lizards can double clutch or even triple clutch off one mating so keep an eye out for more through Fall. The tendency to multi-clutch appears more related to the geographic location from where they came and less to feeding and conditioning but I don’t know which locations tend to produce multi-clutchers; just a reference I saw somewhere.

 Finally! Eggs!

Like Red Gator shows and explains. Partially buried in substrate, moist but not soggy. Moss, vermiculite, paper towels - doesn’t much matter.
They’ll lay if they’ve got eggs in them, with or without a chamber. The only difference is whether you come home to beautiful round little gifts or flattened dried up disappointments that have you muttering "shoulda coulda woulda."

Hey, Hunter,
Thought I had a red male for you but I’m not sure now, may be female. Since your female might be a male, do you want it? It’s quite docile too.

 Finally! Eggs!

Didn’t know they’d double clutch so late. Thanks for the tip. I just set some more lay boxes out there.

 Finally! Eggs!

A couple times an hour? For 8 weeks? When do you sleep?
Seriously, they need a moist substrate (but not soggy) in a mostly sealed container with just a few holes so things don’t dry out and they need a temperature of 80 F plus or minus 5 degrees; the closer to 80 the better. Check the substrate every 2nd of 3rd day to make sure it’s moist. use towels, vermiculite, or moss. Google reptile egg incubator for ideas on how to construct one. With no heat temperatures of say 70F will still result in some hatching; it will just take longer.

I can see them moving inside the egg shells, so I’m guessing any day now.

 Finally! Eggs!

@ Ctrhunter:
That sounds like way too much water. You want it humid, not wet. If the eggs are round and don’t have wrinkles or depressions in them, they are fine and don’t need water. If droplets are forming in the container, or (even worse) on the eggs, it’s too much and you should open the container and air it out a little.

 Finally! Eggs!

I can see veins beneath the shell, which I was told is the yolk sac. So, I’m thinking it’ll be a little longer than I thought. A couple more weeks, maybe. Don’t know if I can wait that long, but I was told that they will absorb most of that yolk sac before they emerge.
