Definately a baby gator. Can you keep it? Hmmmm....what kinds of facilities do you have available for it, how old are you, how much experience with herps do you have, and how much do you know about gator care? Oh, and where do you live in case its illegal. Based on that you didn’t know it was a baby gator, I would assume that you don’t know very much about them, so I would probably say no, but I would wait to hear from some of the people that actually keep gators....I just know a lot about them.

Well, i would see if there’s anyone from dallas that wants a new gator here on the forums...there probably is. I’m not an expert on keeping crocodilians by any means, but it would probably be safe for you to pick it up. If you have a terrarium you an put it it, i would say to do so. Make sure to give it ample water to swim in, but also have a place where it can be dry. I believe that with baby gators, you can feed them insects, such as fairly large crickets, or things, which you could get from a pet store. I believe you can also feed them small chopped up pieces of meat. I would try not to handle it too much, and wash your hands before and after you do. Mainly, I would just try to keep it healthy, and see if somone who has some experience with gators on these forums in the Texas area wants it. I would also try to get advice from the experienced members here, such as Bigolgator, Krokodilyanguy, or Bam in the meantime (If you are experienced on here, sorry if I left your name out....I had been off the forums for a while between when I just browsed them to when i joined, and I don’t remember a lot of the names....)

Oh, and I’m not saying that you CAN’T keep it, I’m just saying that I’m not sure if your ready.

That link is worth checking out if you want to get into the art of keeping captive crocodilians.

I would see if anyone on the forums wants it, and then sell it or give it to them. You mainly want to get it a good home, and it sounds like pretty fast. I would still try to give it comfortable temporary home while you try to. I am curious though, in your first post it said "Can I keep it?", but now you are at "I don’t want it, I’m scared of it."

I suppose that it may be okay temporarily, since your going to sell it. Make sure that it has a place where it can swim though too. like I said, You should probably feed it some when its active. You can give it some insects, and some cut up bits of meat, chicken, or fish.

here’s what I would do.
Make a thread titled "Baby American Alligator Available" on these forums. In that thread, explain how you acquired the gator, and why you need to have someone take it off your hands (you don’t have the capacity for a pet gator). Somone will probably answer. You could also post adds in various online herp classifieds.

Technically its a gator not a croc, and since its effectively a WC and you haven’t had it wormed or anything, I would probably price it between 60 and 80 dollars, but I don’t really know. I would be open to what people offer as well.

Having the alligator in Texas you are violating several laws. Selling it from texas without a permit and selling this animal from the wild you are breaking several more laws. Texas don’t play games when it comes to Game animals and breaking of the law. Let the animal go in the closet area to where you found the animal in a non human populated area. Make sure vegitation is in abundance.

I dont think there are many wild alligators in Texas so this was probly somebodys pet gator that either got away or was released into the wild but gators dont ussually just escape, most are dumped in the wild by incompetant owners. I wouldn’t dump him again if I was you, either give him away to a gator rescue shelter or to a good owner, keep it on the down low though cuz the MAN will get you. Or you could just keep him if you have the time and space but it sounds to me like you are probly not ready for one and want to get rid of it, so find either a shelter or a good owner and ship it by mail if you dont wanna drive, thats how dealers do it, just put it in a cloth bag or even a pillow case in a box with styrofoam over night shipping only or it will die, they dont use alot of oxygen like mammels so that can survive overnight shipping in a box to a rescue shelter or a good owner, if you cant find a shelter or a good owner then you might wanna call the fish and game and say you found it in your yard, they might believe your story or maybe not but I wouldnt dump him cuz he was probly dumped in the first place somewhere close to your property and he may not survive for real, they need to be in pods with the protection of thier mothers to survive in the wild and in thier habitat so if you release it it may die, its illegal to catch or release wild gators so either way you go you break the law, just get him a good home but try shelters first cuz he might not survive in the wild, the gator is small so they shouldnt kill it if you turn it in.......Peace

American Alligators live in great numbers from Texas to Florida, and as far north as North Carolina. Wild caught animals should be released back to the wild. States have laws for instances like this, someone finds an animal in the wild takes it home, does not have a clue what type of animal it is, says they are scared of it, wants to sell it. You can not sell this animal in Texas, and you can not ship it out of Texas. There is a chance that this animal will thrive and then again there is a chance it will become part of the food chain for a larger predator, if released back to the wild, but that is for mother nature to decide not someone who is doing the animal far worse by keeping it in a tub on a shelf.

Ok i am from san antonio (southern texas) it is extremely rare to find a gator down here rather than in dallas.

I suggest buying a 20 gallon long tank to where half of it is land and half of it is water, buy some frozen fuzzies or something and keep it in there for the time being.

I do agree with everyine that says releasing animals back into the wild but for now i think a rescue or a shelter is the best way to go. You wont be able to sell the gator in dallas. The animal control up there is pretty tight.

So what you need to do is find a temporary (adequete) setup that will also be appropriate for some time and feed fuzzies and stuff like that(if this is not what you feed a baby gator please elaborate since i have no gator experience)

I’ve tagged alligators From oklahoma to Western San Antonio to Miami.
Dallas Texas happen to have a nice population of Alligators as does San Antonio if you know where to look. Houston, Austin and Waco also have a good abundance of alligators.

Release the animal, there’s no second guessing about what you should do. If nothing else, call your local Game Warden, and he will tend to the animal.

I knew there was (some) gators in Texas but I thought that the thick population of gators stopped in New Orleans, so thats the first Ive heard of a thick population in Texas, the gator was in someones yard, do baby gators just wonder off that far from the pod and end up in someones yard away from the water? Does this person live near water? if there is a body of water near there is a small chance that it wondered off. I still still dont know if releasing him into the wild is best for the gator unless they can find the momma gator and the pod which is doubtful, if I would have been te one to find it I would most likely keep it but I would rather see the, give it to a shelter, baby gators are almost guaranteed not to survive outside of thier pod and away from mom for the first year but they can hang with mom and the pod for up to 3 years and even then its hard for them to survive. But a baby gator all alone is a sitting duck. Just my two 50 cents.......

Alligator pods do not usually last as long as documentaries and information sheets say they do. An alligator pod actually breaks up within a few months in most cases.

And the quanity of alligators will of course depend on where you are located. The houston area has a nice population. Dallas/Ft Worth has a few nice populations and I know of a good spot in San Antonio. You will also see a large quianity of Alligators at the Benzos State Park. The population is contained large enough to have annual hunts.

Releasing the animal does not matter with personal feelings, it’s illegal to have, caught, sell the animal and wether the animal lives or dies is how nature works.

Call the Game Warden, it’s your only choice because if you try and sell it and get caught, you or your parents are in trouble. Authorities do track the classifieds.

Or you could find someone such as a pet shop person ( who has experience with Herps ) to take the animal from you ......I agree that selling it would be far to risky ( legally ) to be worth the small amount of money you’d get for it .........here is the contact info for the Texas fish and wildlife dept

I’m in Ft. Worth, and have been in the reptile hobby for many years and just to let you know, yes they can be legally owned here, but it requires a lot of bs to make it legal. You should also be prepared to have neighbors complaining when they find out and then the law gets involved. If you do it legally then you have people from the state coming over to inspect. As of right now, the Dallas Zoo is the only legal owners of gators in Dallas. Also if you were to get state liscensed and everything, that permit doesn’t count for most cities and counties. The state can make things legal, but then each city has the power to ban or outlaw them in that city if they choose to. Good luck to you.
