Hi, I just bought a crocodile from a petshop. The only problem is the petshop told me that the croc was from papua new guinea. Its a borosus crocodile. However, there is no such thing as a borosus crocodile. So my dilema, is it a porosus croc or a freshwater new guinea crocodile. The petshop owner told me it was a freshwater crocodile and ive been using fresh water with him for a few days. If he was a porosus, he should be a saltwater croc. How would i determine if he is a freshwater croc, or a saltwater croc. The petshop owner has no idea. He just got the croc from the blackmarket.

Why on earth did you buy a croc without knowing anything about it!?!?!? There is no way to ID it based on the info you gave us, we would need pics for that. But if it is, infact, a porosus your in a load of trouble:
A. Their virtually endangered throughout their range.......no wonder it was in the blackmarket!!!
B. They are the biggest living species of crocodilian on earth, they can attain lengths of up to 20+ feet
C. They are known man-eaters and have horrible dispositions

Ok so its probably a Saltwater Crocodile or C. Porosus this does not mean it needs Saltwater though contrary to popular belief. they actually prefer freshwater so you keeping it in that was fine. Look up Crocodilian.com thay have a very good care page that should set you up pretty good as far as husbandry goes.

Oh and don’t freak out Saltwater Crocs aren’t illegal and they are no longer endangered. Coming from New Guinea means it was probably captive bred on one of the many crocodile farms there.
They are however very aggressive and grow very large as Reedie said and unless you have thousands of dollars to spare and the time to learn the skills neccessary to keep it I would try to sell it. Being that Salties a pretty rare in the pet trade it shouldn’t be too hard to find a good breeder or somene looking to get one.

I had no intentions of buying a crocodile when i went to the petshop, but when i saw him cramped in a very small tank, and the seller poking him every now and then to make him pissed to show the customers how aggresive he could be, i knew i had to buy him. He was very expensive though. around 500 US dollars, when converted to your money.

I’ve read everything in crocodilians.com. I have a farm, and 7 boys working for me, so care wouldnt be a problem. Would it be possible to ID the croc if i post a pic? i’ll try to post a picture later.

Thansk you guys!

I thought so! Well the care and such won’t be as hard as I thought seeing that you are from the Phillipines which is is their natural range. You should be fine fencing in an outdoor enclosure for him, when hes bigger of course.

You’ve got it made if you’ve crocodilian.com and get the temps feeding cleaning etc. the thing should be near bulletproof. Within 10 years you’ll have a real monster right in your own backyard!

You are truly lucky as you live in the ideal place in the ideal situation( on a farm) to keep C. Porosus a privelege most of us U.S. Croc keepers will probably never get.

Well Good Luck with the new Croc and please do post some pics and keep us updated on how hes doing!
