It takes years and years and YEARS for them to grow large in captivity.. Most captive Alligators by civillian so to speak keepers end up taking their time to grow..and rarely do they get past 8 feet... a baby alligator will grow a foot a year roughly for the first 2 years then the growth slows....as a baby they need a varied diet of crickets, and fish pinkies and even adult mice, I wouldnt recommend goldfish they can deplete nutrients. I am glad to hear that your holding off... this will give you time to research... the biggest thing is to remember they need calcium... Quote: Their pretty aggressive, and I would not feed them anything live, as then they associate movement with food, and will bite anything they move. they require very large enclosures, and if you live somewhere warm, I would advise an outdoor enclosure for adults. They get very large, some even as big as 12 to 15 ft.
They are not as aggressive as people make them to believe, American Alligators are the more docile of the kept Crocidilian species..while Caiman dont get nearly as large in comparison they tend to have attitude problems... although it depends on the individual, some will get used to handling to the point of tolerance, and you may have one or two that wont... My old set up in IL was the basement, I had a pond kit with a large enclosure... Alligators dont bite anything that moves, the young ones tend to flee from potential predators, and the larger ones as well the key is to getting them familiar with feeding routinethey come to expect it... you can go as far as to setting up a bedroom for them with a large kiddie pool until they grow..assuring they have a place for basking.... |

Actually I had my dogs and cats around them, its a matter of placing a secure enclosure... when I had mine in the room as youngins I had the door off the hinges, and had a large wooden half door placed instead....you can also place a screen door to keep Cats out...but at least while your in college you can research and ask questions.. they are remarkable creatures and wonderful to have if you have the knowledge |
