 Baby gator.

i think I’m ready for a baby gator now. i have the money, the time, and the space. i decided that a croc. would get to out of hand for me plus i value my life a bit. Could someone please tell me the proper size tank, how deep the water should be, how much land is needed, the proper lighting (wattage). please let me just know all the details i need to know. thank you everyone = D I’m going to treat it as if it were my baby.

 Baby gator.

nevermind.
i know all i need to know for now.
if i have any other questions i’ll post.
i work at petco and the girls that work there.
are very helpful on a lot of reptiles
all though reading the care sheets here
helped me out a bit and were just a little bit
more knowledgable than the girls i work with.
they basically nailed the basic care of a baby gator.
i can’t wait to bring my baby back from the show.

here’s a question actually
what should i ask the vendors about the babies they are selling?

Find out if they are wildcaught or captive bred
Ask as far as if they have been treated for parasites
Ask if they offer health Gauruntee.
(Make sure you have a vet that will treat him)
Eating habits ie how much how often and typical diet

examine the baby for all of its toes, entire length of tail, color of skin, if its dehydrated or not, check its eyes teeth and around the mouth for missing teeth color and if there are signs of stomitis, make sure it is at a healthy weight not skinny.....

 Baby gator.

Thank you very much celtic.
You think i should stick with a 40 gallon, 55 gallon, or a 75 gallon
for the starting tank??
and i got a fluval 305 and a 405.
i just need to get the lighting.
any suggestions ?? for the perfect light setup.

oh and my friend that i work with at petco is coming with me to
the reptile show and she’s outstanding with reptiles and knows all
the questions and everything to look for in the gators health so im
pretty sure i’m not leaving the show until i have myself a beautiful
diamond in the rough of an alligator. = D

 Baby gator.

They actually outgrow tanks quick... my first set up for my guys involved a rubbermaid Tank (Horse trough) it was 100 Gallons in a Room with a ramp to give access.... I eventually did one of those pond setups in my basement with the ready made pond lined with rocks for support... I think honestly tanks for these guys are a waste of money you’ll be rid of the tank and quick... set a room up for your guy, place a water trough in the corner with a ramp for access, you can also use a filter to keep the water circulating.... the room allows room in and out and it allows for growth... With mine when I had them indoors I had my lights set for timers... I maintained the indoor temperature of the room at a minimum of 80, my water temp was usually about 85 it varied but never got higher then 88 or so... I tried to balance the temperature to avoid stress...

I would keep one corner of the room STRICTLY for basking....I used flourecent lighting and two basking lamps, this usually helped regulate the temperature and gave great basking some natural rock to stay toasty warm...

Areas... twice the length of body for basking space (Land) water should be deep enough to swim fully submerge and turn around

My light setups are based on my keeping, I never house any of my Gators in a tank they always had a room....(And eventually a basement...and then the outdoor enclosure) purchasing the alligator is a big step and isnt the expensive...to properly keep and have the right set up will cost you an arm and a leg... Assure too not to feed ALL fish and all fish and crickets... avoid small gravel they tend to eat/swallow and can compact... no fake plants (can cause bloackage) make sure theres a vet in your area that will treat it if its sick (the day you dont have said vet.. is going to be that one time it gets sick) check your laws both state, city and county... and dont jump at the first gator you see... "reptiles" and "Gators" are completely different areas.. so be precise be picky.. ive seen ’healthy’ ones that were often sick.... Good luck

 Baby gator.

thanks again.
i’m not spending a dime on any of the needs i will be spending it on food though.
that will cost me a crap load because i’m never going to starve my baby.
my rooms temp is always at 79 for some reason so i think im going to just leave the
tank water at room temp.

am i able to feed it pellets at first or is that a no go?
should i just stick with crickets and fish at first. ?

 Baby gator.

As I stated earlier crickets and fish straight up are a no no.... and actually as small as it is its cheaper to feed, I would suggest spending money on a proper enclosure for him.

Mazuri croc pellets are great but they arent "food" in other words, would you as a croc enjoy sitting around munching on dry pellets? they have great nutrition. crickets are okay as a snack, but try actual chunks of meat, with mine as younguns I used pinkies and chunks of deer. stew beef works equally well, the importance of meat is protein and fat, and cickets with the occasional fish.. the importance of pinkies is for calcium something the crickets dont offer (but they offer protein) Fish as a main source are HORRIBLE they have thiamenese that breaks down the calcium and all the good stuff INCLUDING much needed vitamins and can cause B-12 deficiency, MBD, and other complications. I only reccomend Fish on occasion as a ’treat’ you have to think in the wild these guys eat small mammals, crickets, larvae, and fish...and then some.. (even each other) they have a large variety that regulates what their body accepts and doesn’t... but in captivity they are prone to so many disorders if you do not give the proper fat/protein/calcium ratio.

Regardless of the temp I would still reccomend a heater for the water, a temperature guage for both the water (Can be stuck as a strip to the tank outside) a temperature Guage for the room itsself... the one day you n expecting it, is that time when temp drops or goes up to high.. Not to be ’rude’ but if your friend was so reptile savvy she would have already discussed this with you. skimping on enclosures because you want to spend more on food is all well and good, but if I were you (which Im not) Id set up an enclosure that is going to last awhile and splurge on the enclosure, ight now hes small enough that he isnt going to be expensive to feed... Mine and Bayous are, I have 3 and all of them are well over 5foot Ive had them since hatchlings...but I spent money on enclosure instead of being cheap and buying a glass tank that after a year or two I had to get rid of anyway.....

check your laws, city state AND county..(not only for you and the crocs benefits but we dont need any more negative limelight in the reptile community, most of us have busted arse and being poisitive as keepers and do not need our work being unravelled...because of a "New keeper")
Make sure you have a vet lined up that will treat your croc if he becomes sick (Not all will and even some reptile spec vets will refuse)
Lighting is important Flourecent and heat lamp
accurate basking space, I already discussed with you as well as a temperatures
