u arn’t doing any thing wrong, ur female is either not old enough to praduce and/or if she is then she is not full of eggs at the moment. she should praduce in spring (if she is old enough) so just give it some time.

she may be stressed . the newt may have something to do with it, i would remove the newt and change the water.

Yes you definitely need to remove the newt for a couple of reasons. The fbts secrete toxins which may kill the newt plus depending on the type of newt it needs much cooler water. If it is a paddle tail newt (I have both fbts and a paddle tail newt in separate tanks) then the paddle tail could kill and possibly eat the fbts-paddle tail newts are aggressive little guys-it’s hard to keep 2 of them together. Plus if you do have eggs the newt will eat them as well. I have a total of 5 fbts-3 adults (1 boy and 2 girls) in a 50 gallon and 2 babies (the size of a thumb nail) in a 5 1/2 gallon until the get bigger. My adult male mates all the time with the adult females but no eggs. Everything has to be just right for eggs to be produced. You can "induce" mating and egg laying by gradually lowering the water temp for 6-8 weeks and then gradually warming up the water again. Just be prepared for a ton of eggs-could be around 100-200. You have to move the eggs to a separate tank with water temps of about 77 degrees fahrenheit or else the adults will eat them. I would suggest doing a lot of research about fbts and breeding them and make sure you have everything ready for eggs.

Hey not a problem. Glad you removed the newt-best thing for all of your little guys and gals. Keep me updated and let me know when you got eggs! Hopefully we will both have some soon!

FBTs-I have 2 adult girls and 1 adult boy plus 2 babies (not sure of sexes) the size of a thumb nail. I will also hopefully be breeding african dwarf frogs. I currently breed mollies (not like it’s hard!) to feed the fry to my paddle tail newt and african dwarf frog. I have 5 tanks total: 3 fbts in 50 gallon, 1 paddle tail newt in 10 gallon, 2 baby fbts in 5 1/2 gallon, and 1 african dwarf frog (for now) in 5 1/2 gallon plus a 20 gallon with the mollies in it for breeding. I also breed flightless fruit flies for the baby fbts and want to start breeding crickets for the adult fbts and the newt.

Does your newt have a paddle like tail or is his tail skinny? If it is paddle like then it is not a fire belly newt, it’s a paddle tail newt. A lot of pet stores sell paddle tail newts as fire belly newts-where I got mine they had him listed as a fire belly newt but he is a paddle tail. Paddle tails also have red bellies and are confused a lot with fire belly newts. Both have similar needs but paddle tails are more aggressive with other newts, etc than fire belly newts are. Check out caudata . org (no spaces). They have care sheets, pictures, etc for both paddle tail and fire belly newts. Post a picture if you are able to.
