 Anaconda diet - fish?

Has anyone been able to get their anacondas to eat fish in captivity. I have a yellow male, about 16 months old. He is an amazing eater, never refuses a meal (when offered mice). His feeding response is great, he never even hesitates to strike at his prey when offered. I have tried to get him to eat fish to add variety to his diet, but he is uniterested in anything that is not warm blooded. I know anacondas feed on fish in the wild, but do they not normally eat fish in captivity?

Another weird thing, he threw up water (or what appeared to be water) the other day when I was handling him. I know snakes will occasionally regurgitate meals, though I have not had this happen to mine, but I’ve never heard of them throwing up pure liquids. What could be the cause of this?

Could be RI but hard to tell from basic description like that.

Other thing is how recently he had eaten. It mightve been pre-regurtiation that he then decided not to throw up after he then felt safe.

Iv never heard of an anaconda eating fish.Anyway its best to stick with rodents, fish just aren’t a good for them....

And what very likely happened when your snake threw up water,is that he just took a drink......
Most snakes will do that,I don’t know why though, but its nothing to be too worried about...
But when it dose happen it best to put the snake down and leave it alone for a bit....

I had the same thing happen to my burm, and as already said it was preregurgitation, as long as it was very watery i would imagine that would be it. Keep an eye on it but i dont think you have anything to worry about!

I haven’t tried fish but for variety I give mine a quail every now and again. He doesn’t even hesitate so he must like it.

you are right they do eat fish in the wild at least when they are still young when they get older fish really wont do anything for them but i think even in the wild they only eat them if they have gone a while without eating something that they normally eat. like birds and rodents like them big gerbil things that i cant remember the name of, so i wouldn’t stress out if it doesn’t eat a fish. if you want to give him/her variety give it baby ducks or quail like the other guy does.

I have no knowledge of it being unhealthy, but I’m not sure how their body does breaking down fish scales and handling fish oils over extended durations and multiple feedings.

While nothing I can think of gives me a reason for it being BAD, my intuition says that the compenents of a fish are less easily broken down than those of mammals/birds.

Mainly > 1) Scales are tough stuff. 2) Not sure how fish oils compare to mammalian fluids/oils/fats. 3) Carteliage is more durable and flexable than bone and is worn down differently, and may be therefore harder to digest.

Unhealthy > No/Probably Not
Easier to swallow > Certainly. Slippery and Cylindrical with no/less hard skeleton.
Easier to digest > Probably Not/Not Sure
More Nurtitional > Doubtful. Fish just don’t have the fat supply that mammalian/avian prey do. Snakes do need fat in their diets, same as humans, but the issue is balance. Don’t use guinea pigs because they are the easiest way to put your snake in the range of unhealthily obese. My *guess* is fish are just too lean to be a permanent food source, size regardless.

Just my 2 cents and some educated guesses. These are not definite answers, just strong presumptions looking at a few of the variables.

i have tried to feed my conda fish twice, and he could have cared less about them. right now he still on rats. tell me what you guys think of this, cause i have had alot of people tell me i could never do it, i freeze my rats "most humane way to knock them off", for a couple of hours, just until death, then i put it under a heat lamp for 20 min, with turning it every so often. then i put it in their and he seems to love it, never refused it so far.

Most humane way to kill them is CO2 gasing as it works in 5-7 minutes if done right.

Live rats CAN be aggressive, but if they are as out of it as you seem to make them, I wouldn’t be too concerned.

call me uneducated, but how do you CO2 gas them? if that’s more humane I’ll defiantly try it.

yea i was wondering the same thing because right now the only way i know how to prekill the rats is put them in a old pillow case and give them one good hard whack on the concrete i don’t like doing it like that but i also don’t like to potentially having to take my snake to the vet and getting a bite wound taking care of or worse having one of them die like my friends burm did when a rabbit bit it while being constricted and hit a vain and bleed to death. so i am interested on how you co2 them.

CO2 info:

Shed info:

Sheds will not be sped up by eating more than normal but CAN be delayed by eating less.
*If a snake is partly shed and eats this CAN help the shed split more easily as the body expands, but this is not what my first statement refers to*
For my conda it was once every 5 weeks, give or take a couple days.
