iv talked to a bunch of people and they all say that using paper towels for the bottom of the tank is the best. i was wondering, is it harder or anything to keep a high humidity?

You mean for substrate?
With screen tops I find it hard to keep in humidity with papertowls, or newspaper. To keep in a good amount of humidity I cover most of the sceen except where I put the heat lamp, then put cypress mulch and some moss and I spray 2 or more times a day.
With newspaper or paper towels I suggest you cover more then 90% of the screen and spray 3-4 times a day. Now with tubs and other cages its easyer because it has less ventalation and keeps humidity in with spraying the cage daily.

The problem is not with the paper towels, I promise you. It’s this > ’except where I put the heat lamp’

Heat lamps and UTH (under tank heaters) work in VERY different ways. A UTH heats the floor of the tank to provide direct contact heat with less spread creating less heat in the air. When you use a Heat Lamp you are warming the total air within the tank, which dries out the air and thus lowers humidity! If you switch to UTH I would bet even money that you could run 1 humidifier in the room (even a COLD air humidifier so the room doesn’t become unbearable < this is what I do) on its lowest power and have 50-60% humidity day in and day out, with refilling the tank once every 24-48 hrs.

Tubs generally wont even NEED spray if you use a Rubbermaid or such. The key again is using the UTHs to your advantage. By placing the water bowl over or partially over the UTH you can keep the floor of the whole tub warm AND heat the water to increase humidity. When I keep my snakes in tubs for travel or shed, the humidity in there can be 50-70% without ever using one spritz of water!

Cyprus DOES hold more base mositure and thus have higher humidity IF you compare it to paper towels in identical setups. But strictly on a personal bias, I prefer using UTHs and paper towels over Heat Lamps and Cyprus because lets face it... theres a huge difference in ease of clean up!

Thanks that actually did help me ! LOL
since I read what you just said Im curious about the temps. Should I just have the heat pad and I will have no problem with the snakes? I have heat pads and lamps in some of my cages to try to create a hot spot and a cool side. Should I stop useing the heat lamps?

There is no right or wrong when it comes to UTH/Heat Lamps really...

Most breeders I know use UTH simply because they have so many snakes that misting each cage several times a day is an extensive job otherwise.

But there are certainly those who stick w/ the heat lamps. I know N.E.R.Ds always has heat lamps running whenever I go visit their store (though I’m not sure what they use back in the breeding rooms).

If you don’t mind spraying a few times a day, then heat lamps are perfectly fine. May day doesn’t allow for regular time intervals to do that so I go with a 2 UTH approach. 1 UTH goes under the water bowl (again for humidity and heat purposes) and the other goes near/under/partially under the hide. Because I have a thich rock waterbowl this allows the rock to become a nice basking spot while also raising humidity, and the smaller UTH under the hide allows them to thermoregulate more easily.

Like I said, it’s mostly about convenience and personal/snake preference. Even before I used UTH’s I still had to run humidifiers constantly to keep the %s where I wanted them. Now I can run even a cold-air humidifier on low and the %s stay perfectly in the range I want AND the room is not at all stuffy or uncomfortable for people to be in as well.
