Okay. Don’t use bark, sand, moss, or anything with perlite and fertilizer in it. If there is a pet store near you, get some Bed-a-Beast or Eco-Earth. These products are a bit more expensive and you don’t get a whole bunch of it, but it is completely safe for anoles - and I use it all the time with my babies! The females (as I have found) will lay eggs in it as well. The cubes usually sell for around $4-$5, and though it says "enough for 40 gallons", there isn’t. I would say there is enough for about 25 gallons if you use about an inch of substrate. Bark mulch could work, but this stuff is also very good and fool proof. There are no preservatives, it is completely organic, and when you change out the bedding, you can dump it on any plants you may have - it is completely environmentally safe. I pretty much swear by this stuff. : )

You can get a 50 lb bag of organic potting soil or organic compost for a couple of $$ at most any garden supply place. It will be enough for several 40 gallon enclosures. Just make sure to sterilize it by heating in the oven or microwave to eradicate any possible "beasties".

I agree that potting soil is much better price-wise, but I’m willing to spend money on stuff that I know doesn’t need to be sterilized. But maybe one day I’ll try the potting soil method. I know, I know, organic, with NO fertilizer or perlite. Yup, I get it...been here long enough to have memorized those common phrases. : )
