Incubators are easy. All you need is a container of some sort. a medium for the eggs, and a heat source. Styrafoam boxes make an excellent container since they hold heat and moisture well. You can also use a large deli dish or something similar. The preferred medium is Vermiculite since it retains water well and is sterile. You can, however, use organic potting soil (without Perlite or fertilizers) as long as you keep it moist. You can either use a light, Ceramic Heat Emitter, or Under Tank Heater for warmth depending on the container that you use. Make a depression in the moist medium with your thumb, put the egg in it (taking care not to roll it from the original position) put the top on the container (with a few holes punched in it for ventilation) and keep it at 85 degrees. The eggs should hatch in 35-40 days.
If this all seems too much for you, just leave the eggs in the enclosure with the adult. The egg will hatch about a week later than if they were incubated and you may get a slightly lower hatch rate but they will do just fine. Remove the hatchlings as they appear and put each of them in their own 10 gallon enclosure.

Hey! I have a gravid female (is that the right term for pregnant anole?) At least I am pretty sure she is. Actually witnessed one of the mating sessions about a week or so ago. But she has gotten really big in the last week. I was hoping to incubate any possible eggs in the reptarium. Could I do something like put a ventilated clear cover (invert a plastic food container with holes in it) over top where she lays it and let nature take it’s course from there? I am really concerned about the moving the egg part. I put a later of thick moistened peat substrate over thier normal orchid bark yesterday in hopes of giving her a choice place to lay + to help bring the humidity level up in the reptarium. Anyway, those are my plans - Want this to work so I appreciate any feedback. Thanks.

Peat is NOT a good substrate. If you are going to leave the egg in the enclosure, you don’t need to take any additional measures. The female will bury (or partially bury) the egg and it will be just fine. The problem that you will have is finding out where she laid the egg. Check in the corners and at the base of plants or other "furniture".

Thanks for that Peat tip. The substrate is actually that "Bed A Beast" reptile product that comes like a solid brick until you wet it then expands. It resembles peat to me

They will sometimes refuse to lay eggs in that stuff and become egg bound. I have had the best success using either organic compost or organic potting soil (as previously mentioned).

I have a female. She may be gravid. What are the consequenses of having non- organic soil?

If you use a substrate that she can’t (or won’t) bury the egg in, she may become egg-bound and die. If she does lay the eggs without burying them, they will collapse and die. Bottom line, make sure the substrate is one she can dig in. No problems with either organic compost or organic potting soil.

Vermiculite can be found at most garden supply stores. The price varies with the size of the bag.
