Atrax I have a very nice male Green anole. I wanted to get him a friend so i picked up what i thought was a female. Everything was great for the first few weeks but these last couple of days things have got a little weird. Instead of running away she now will head bob and display a dewlap. Is that normal for a female or is it a male. I’ve checked both of their undersides. My male is a male no question, he has those two larg scales just under his cloaca. The other one I’m not so sure. I don’t see anything, she is pretty small and it just might be hard to see them. Your input would be of great help.

Atrax Male Green Anoles are identifiable as such even in the egg. Try using a magnifying glass. Rarely, a male will only have the enlarged postanal scale on one side but 99.9% will have them paired. The behavior that you describe is typical of a male. Females almost never confront a male - even if they are the larger of the two.

Atrax Thats what I figured. They have been together now for a few weeks with no problems. I find it funny that it took them this long to fineally deside they had had enough of each other. Well, I guess it’s back to the pet store for the now little man, not little girl, and I get to try again. At least now I now about the scales and will have them flip them over for me and have a look. Thank you very much.

Atrax oh...all my females have a small dewlap and one of them will even confront the male!! She’s 100% female (unless males can get pregnant). He’s easily twice her size, and 100% male - he’s got a very large dewlap and has fathered far too many baby anoles to count! from what i’ve read, males have a much more pointy face than females

Atrax All female anoles possess a dewlap. You can’t tell the gender of an anole just by dewlap or size of head or stripe alone. The only way to be 100% positive is like Atrax said, to check the postanal scales.
