Now What?
I caught my anoles mating, and I found a deep hole in the ground, though there is nothing in it. What should I expect/do?

Now What? It is most likely a practice hole. Females often dig them several days before laying eggs. For the next few days or so, begin to inspect in any plant pots in the cage as well as in the cage corners or around objects. Atrax, correct me if i am wrong but i seem to remember something to that effect yet can’t seem to find any information in previous posts.

Now What? Feed it pinhead crickets, leafhoppers, fruit flies, aphids, and tiny moths if available. It is a risk to leave them with the adults. Obviously if the anole is a male it cannot be kept with the adults. If the anole survives the first few weeks with the parents and the enclosure is of sufficient size, it may stay. If you see aggression from the parents i’d remove it immediately. The anoles don’t always eat immediately so don’t worry. Try to make sure that it is drinking water however.

Now What? Wow. Thanks, Coolguy. I’ll keep that in mind. Oh, and where do you get leafhoppers and aphids? I don’t have leafhoppers where I live...

Now What? Leafhoppers can be collected with a net for bugs or near a porch light at night. If you have a net, just sweep it through tall grass and weeds in a field and you may find leafhoppers. Believe me, they live in Texas. I used to live there. Go to bugguide.net and look up leafhoppers, froghoppers, planthoppers, and sharpshooters. You can find aphids on many plants. They will most likely be on the leaves or stems of the plant. If you have flowers in your backyard, especially roses, check there. Aphids are very small and leafhoppers can be 1/4 to 1/2 " normally. Some grow larger. You may know froghopper nymphs as "spit-bugs". Remove the frothy substance if you find one and they are great for anoles.

Now What? Mmmmhhhmmmmm. I haven’t seen it lately... oh, and I found an egg in a dent in the ground, no where close to a hole, but it’s offwhite and on the surface, under a plant. I found a very very very very very small dent in it... I think it’s no good.
