| my mom’s friend’s daughter hsa a pet shop, and deals with anoles, and she says no, as long as you dust the fod, then you’ll be fine. Personally, I took her advice, and I don’t use a UV bulb... although ifyou don’t use UV, you’ll have to dust their food more often... BUT, some sites recomend it, i’ve read some that say you don’t need it |

But I think its more benefical for them. And don’t you need the UV so that the powder can work properly??? I think its best you have one anyway. Can’t hurt. |

This is right; all animals, more or less, need UV light to absorb and utilize certain vitamins, particularly D, which is needed for the absorption of calcium. This is particularly true of reptiles, which rely on the sun for many things beyond body warmth. All the added extra vitamins in the world are useless (and a waste of money, besides), if the animal cannot use them. One of the reasons many people do not feel they need them (particularly pet shops, which only house their animals for a short time before the next turn-over) is that in the short run the effects of no UVB is never seen. In addition, some animals, like anoles, live a fairly short life, relatively speaking, so many owners/shops don’t make a huge deal about a two to three year life span and a slightly smaller size, when, in fact, these reptiles are capable of growing a bit larger and living a bit longer than they generally do. In the short term, then, lack of UVB light will not be noticed right away, but for best health and longevity, it is pretty necessary, and not just an expensive (for the bulb) suggestion. In another thread on this topic, BTW, someone mentioned UVA light (black light) -- that is a different light, which helps nocturnal reptiles hunt in darkness (by helping them see better in the dark). Nothing to do with vitamin absorption at all, but I didn’t know (at the time of my response)why it is sometime suggested for lizards. Since anoles hunt in the daytime, the blacklight UVA, far as I can tell, is useless for them. Best, Gordon (relearning all I used to know as a kid because some magical force in the universe dropped a baby anole on my doorstep). |

| UVB lights are absolutely necessary for an anole to be happy it allows them to process vitamins and they love to bask. if deprived of that they are usually unhappy. You are supposed to simulate their natural environment as best you can. UVB rays are a necessary part of their natural environment. |

And they’re not really that expensive either. So its best you get one. |
