 Anole Rescues

I know one shouldn’t try to rescue anoles and such from pet stores, because that only encourages them to keep stocking the poor creatures, but when I went to get crickets for my one, lone, male (green) anole named Sobe, my heart went out to two, tiny, sick little green anoles in the cage. All the other anoles looked relatively healthy, but they were all males. In a tiny, 10 gallon tank. Never a good thing I’ve heard. Well, I brought them home in two seperate carriers, and the smaller one managed to start drinking some of the water I misted it with, but died within 5 hours.

The other one, a male, seems to be doing very well. He ate at least 6 crickets in a few hours, has changed from a dark brown, splotched with black to a pale, yellowish green, and has become very active.

Now I am a new anole owner, having only owned Sobe for 2 weeks. My friend and I played a carnival game, won, and found out they had lizards as prizes.

Within two days I had spent over 100 dollars getting what I thought was best for him. I am a very conscientious person, that believes in taking good care of anything and everything. I bought him a ten gallon tank, using a sterile chip type bedding that feels more like dirt, or finely ground mulch. I have a substrate heater on the bottom of the cage, fake vine plants for him to climb on, and a reptile baskinh/heat lamp with a UVA/UVB bulb. I keep him around 80-84 degrees in temperature. I can’t be sure exactly what humidity, because I haven’t thought of until recently, or know where to get a monitor. I do spray him 2-3 times a day, and he is almost always a very bright green. He’s a little pig too. A dozen crickets only last him 2 or 3 days.

Now my question is... Should I go out and buy an entirely new terrarium/environment, or risk putting the two together in a ten gallon tank? Or even just buying a giant tank and putting the two in that. Any and all advice would be appreciated.

It would be best to buy a large tank and put them together(with 10 gallons of their own space,so no less than 20 gal.).I just had an anole who died after laying eggs, and it was very sad and i am sorry for yours. But I think it was a great thing you did,Even though it died.Anyway, remember no smaller than 20 gallons.

In my opinion, since the other anole died, I wouldnt put them together quite yet. Just to make sure. It is always a good idea to have a quaratine period before introducing new naimals to eachother. It would be awful if the other little guy did have something and got your anole sick and they both died. Just my opinion. But kuddoos to you sounds like you have a great little set up. I think its sad that they are giving them away at carnivals. So many people win them and DONT take care of them the way you are....Good Job and keep us posted!
