This is Scary! Ok.I Have had two males and a female (anoles) in a 50 gal. and the two males usually leave each other alone other than occasional chasing. But 5 days ago,the two boys were acting weird. They would chase eachother all day and then hide, so i watched them for a while. After about 10 minutes they came out. They started to stare at eachother and circle around eachother. After about 5 minutes of that, the newly caught and large male started to approach the other, but instead of him running away, he came toward him too. Then they stopped for a while and I was so caught up in this I didnt think about stopping them. Then the large newly caught one bit the other.I suddenly came to my senses and pulled them apart. Then I saw they both had this ridge behind their necks and the old one I caught a long time ago had black things on his nose. Those are gone now but here is a weird thing that doesnt make sense.I looked up stuff about the ridge and it said it should be gone by 15 min., but my newly caught one still has the ridge. If you dont provide any info i will have to let one go. He is in a totally different cage now and he is alone and looks so sad.

This is Scary! Anole males shouldn’t be in captivity together. They are either fighting over the female, or have territorial issues. The one in the seperate cage will be fine by itself. Anoles are loners in the wild, so its not going to harm him if he’s by himself.

I can help......the ridge is UNDER his neck? Usually the ridge is onto of the neck some have it down the back as well. You do know they have dewlaps right? That is the pinkish red thing they display when fighting. Thats normal. If its under his neck, what do you mean by "ridge". sincerely yours NikkE

This is a dewlap--if you didn’t know. Is this what you mean?!?

HI, I have searched about the lizzards and I found out if you have to male lizzards together the will fight. ABout the ridge it will go away. But, the one with the black things on its nose you need to take it to the vet. That happens to lizards that are caught. The ones are not from the store. Renne of1991

This is Scary! You could have a 300 gallon tank and still have a problem with just 2 male anoles. The key is to have more than 1 basking spot, preferably spaced apart from each other.

This is Scary! I’ve learned most of it from experience and reading books. My first anole setup was a 10 gallon tank that was part of a fish kit. The light fixture/hood enclosed 2 incadesant bulbs which made it easy for my 2 males to get along. They each had their own female too which made it even easier. I tried taking a bulb out of one side once to try to cool the tank down and had to put it back in to stop the fighting. This was many years ago and I’ve picked up little tips here and there. Some of it is common sense when you consider how a reptilian brain functions. My advice would be to go out and buy more than one book on any animals that you own. I’ve also taken care of iguanas, day geckos, newts, frogs, and some of the info used for them can be used for other species. I’ve just recently started my new collection and maybe I’ll be active in even more forums soon. I might be getting a ball python really soon.
