I’m a green anole newbie... lighting question OK, I’ve read a boatload of stuff, set up the tank, it is day 2 and so far so good... big question is lighting hrs. I have a 3-6 month old female green anole; a long 10 gallon glass tank w/ screen top and eco soil in bottom; basking light w/ a branch and I beleive that I need to get a UVB fluorescent. The tank is setup w/ hot zone est. 85-90; mid zone w/ plastic plants 70-79 degrees and cold side w/ water bowl and hidey 1/2 log. Room is usually 70ish at night. Letting her get acclimated... she loves the basking light but goes brown, was worried about dehydration, misting alot, humidity is 70%. I know that yesterday she ate some peach and banana baby food w/ anole pellets. Put in 6 dusted lil pinhead crickets last night, not sure if she ate one last night (i’m at work now). So... lights? Do I set up the basking to be on 10-12 hrs during the day say 8 am - 8 pm and get the UVB and run at the same time? (I know decrease by a coupla hrs in winter). Or do I keep the basking light on at night too? The tank stays at 70 w/o lights so I thought night time is ok to turn it off. She’s off schedule now, should I go gradual to the 10-12... ok... I’ll let you guys answer and stop being a pest! Thanks in advance.

I知 a green anole newbie... lighting question With anoles you will very seldomly get the same answer from multiple people. The best thing to do is to try different things and see what works for your anoles. Also take what other people tell you and build on that. Now to your original question: I have a day/night timer on all my lights. From 7am unitl 9pm i have two 18" uva/uvb tubes on as well as a basking lamp. From 9pm unitl 7am i have a black light on. Serves no other purpose other than visual stimulation. As far as the food i buy in bulk from Fluckers Farm and thats all mine eat. I have 2 male and 6 female bahaman anoles and 4 day geckos. The anole maybe stressed at first and not openly eat but after a few days they will eat just fine as soon as you drop the crickets in. Hope this helps you and if you have any questions fell free to ask. You can find my email address in my profile.

I知 a green anole newbie... lighting question i agree, have you thought about adding a ceramic bulb with thermostate. expensive i know but it allows you to control the exact temp of the viv. alternatively put something like a moonlight spot in. not only will they sightly raise the nightime temp of the viv, they will also make the tank look nicer at night and give you the chance to add nocturnal animals if you have enough room

I知 a green anole newbie... lighting question Thanks for the info... Day 3 and looks good. I measured the temp at the basking light and too hot (110*) so I moved it up to be 90-50*. Now, she’s green when basking and only goes brown o that branch when we come in (stress I imagine). We’re set up for on 7 am - 9 pm and off through the night. I will get the 2 tube lights for daytime. Kid’s room - so no nightlight is just fine. Night temp (currently 70*) will have to be figured out... I’m thinking of putting in a waterfall for humidity (currently 90%). Are those decorative ones ok? I have one that I could scrub and fit in... its shaped like a tree w/ animals on it. Anyway... she didn’t touch baby food and dried anole food so I’m not planning on giving her anymore of that and it looks to me like she ate 3-4 crickets w/i/ 1st 24 hrs and another 1 last night. Think she’s shy in front of us. So it looks like thanks to your website... we’re up and running. I did receive yet another 15 gallon herp tank... vent holes, heating rock , hot pad... I know that heat rock is no good for anoles... but the heat pad? Can that be used to raise night temps in winter? Cannoli the anole says " "... which is Thanks alot in anolish!

I知 a green anole newbie... lighting question its brown because it thermoregulates. generally when they are green it means they have just been basking and when they are brown they usually are a little cold. they tend to be a pale brown if they are stressed. a stone with a hole in it acts as a good waterfall, put a bowl beneath it and hide the filter in the gravel.

I知 a green anole newbie... lighting question the waterfall is a good idea but sometimes they tend to go to the bathroom in the water causing the water filter or pump to get cloged up and it tends to get messy...
