Please stop providing misinformation Flynner. I know you are just trying to help, but PLEASE.

Anyways, *Cracks fingers* Onto how to sex an anole:

SEXING ANOLES:

For BROWN/BAHAMAN ANOLES, its easy: The females have a diamond-shaped pattern running along their backbone, whereas the males don’t.

For GREEN ANOLES, it’s a little bit harder and complicated:

It has often been claimed that the best way to tell a male from a female apart is through the white stripe along the backbone that most females exhibit. However, this is often a false judgement when trying to distinguish between the two sexes. Juvenile male adults often exhibit this feature well into early adulthood, and even some full-fledged male adults can still exhibit this white stripe. The only true way to determine the difference between a male and a female is a few subtle differences: the MATURE males will often be rather larger, and have larger, more prominent heads and snouts than the females, and of course exhibit a much larger dewlap. Also, adult males will exhibit another prominent feature ONLY seen in mature adult males of the species, and that is a hemipenile bulge which one can see underneath the tail just below the vent. The females are often smaller, and with a head and snout more in proportion to the body, and can also exhibit dewlaps, but are often smaller and less frequently displayed/seen. However, it can be difficult at times to merely uses this as a means to tell the two sexes apart. The only true way to determine the sex of an anole, especially in juvenile specimins, is by the ENLARGED POSTANAL SCALES / PORES seen in only the male reptile species, again located just under the vent of the anole. You can do this by handling the anole, but do NOT grab the anole by the tail as it will cause them to lose it. Hold them gently, until they calm down, and try to look underneath the anole and look below the vent/crotch to see if you see the enlarged postanal scales. If none are present, then it is a female. Or if you cannot handle it or it runs, then try to look when you see the anole pressed belly-flat against the glass walls of the aquarium. A magnifying glass can be used to help look for the enlarged postanal scales/pores. This test is the MOST accurate test.

AND YES, the enlarged postanal pores/scales are present since the anole is born (IF it is a male), so even if your anoles are young/juveniles then the scales will still show through. Although being smaller, it may take some time to find them. They are usually parallel to each other and can be spaced right next to each other or somewhat spaced apart.

Here is a pic with the enlarged postanal scales, or "pores" as they are sometimes called, highlighted in purple:

Also, generally adult females are smaller in size and disposition to the full-fledged mature adult males. Here is a pic for size reference of an ADULT male GREEN anole and an adult female GREEN anole, with my male Buster underneath and the now deceased Ami on top:

It’s an adult male green anole. He is not that large. I have seen a larger MALE at the Petsmart near where I live. He has to be at least 10" long. Now HE is one big green anole!!!

My oldest (and largest) male, Thor, was 7-1/2 years old and 10-3/4" when he passed away last week of old age. I hope one of my current crew will live as long and grow as large.

its kinda easy to tell the difference just look at their dewlaps/throat fans. a male has a huge dewlap kind of a pinkish color.a female has a very small dewlap the same color as the males.

Who is getting sassy?? I wasn’t being sassy, just saying he is not as big as he seems. There are larger male anoles out there.

He is extremely fat and well-fed though. Sorry, forgot to add that in, lol. Maybe that’s why he looks so big. He is about 7.5" snout-to-tail at the moment. He is probably 2-3 years old. He was already a mature adult male when I got him.

If just his body is about 3-4" long, he is an adult. If you store-bought your anole, it is kinda hard to judge how old they are unless you hatch them and raise them yourself. I am only estimating my anole’s age based on the fact that most anoles only live 2-3 years in the wild, and since he was probably wild-caught and full-grown I figured he was about 1-2 years of age when I bought him.

Thanks. Yes, Buster, Yumi, and Sora are doing wonderfully for themselves. The same unfortunately cannot be said for Louie and Daisy, or Ami from awhile back. Poor things... but they are all in a better place now. And the trio is still doing wonderfully in their 30 gallon home. :)
