 Cool anole project!!!!

This project is to attract wild anoles to your backyard using fruit flies.

Materials-
Scissors,scotch tape,rotten fruit,and plastic small bottle

Procedures-
1)Cut the top part of the bottle (above the label) using the scissors.
2)place the rotten fruit at the bottom of the cut bottle.Place the funnel part ( cut part of bottle’s top)inward(like a regular funnel) into the bottle,So that the funnel is hanging over the rotten fruit.
3)Tape the edges around the funnel(that is attached to the original bottle) lightly so that it can be taken off.
4)Place bottle outside.
5)When enough fruit flies are collected, open the funnel and release them to attract the anoles.

How this Works-
Fruit flies only go where they want to.In this case it’s the rotten fruit. Well, they go through the funnel, eat the fruit, but when they try to leave, they are so unintelligent that they try to get out from the sides (not the middle where the funnel meets the bottle) where they become trapped.Try it, it’s helpful to the
environment.Hope you like the outcome.

Looks like a great way to make a food source for pet anoles as well.

It could, but these fruit flies can carry diseases, that’s why I only recommend them for wild anoles.

Wild caught insects are safe unless your near a road or someone who uses pesticides.

How do you know that they’re safe though. For example, most mosquitoes carry a disease called malaria. You can’t tell the differences from little insects like fruit flies.Anyway if a mosquito consumes your blood, that bacteria from that disease can be transfered into that persons body,Causing a very harmful sickness that can damage organs and such. Now if an insect that you feed your anole had a disease and it was strong your anole may die.All I’m saying is not to do it,But if you really want to risk it I’d say go ahead.Remember if your anole gets sick from any insect the expenses will be great to treat it.I definitely wouldn’t do it or even risk it for such a matter though. It’s your pet your risking.

True you can’t use the parent generation of fruit flies but if you were to breed them a few times you could. I’m sure by the time you breed their offspring in a new sterile fruit you’d be ok, it should only take about 3 weeks to do if I remember my fruit fly lab from Biology right, you might even get a few wingless ones to show up.

Yes,that is a very good way to do.Now that I heard of it I might also try it.They may be too small to handle though. It could possibly work.

Well you can breed them.It may be hard but it sounds probable.I think by what he means is maybe with enough breeding there could be a wide spread deformity in that particular group, meaning wingless fruit flies,or as I should call them, ants:)

See "Raising Feeder Insects". Buy a culture of Drosophila melanogaster or Drosophila hydei - both are sold as genetically mutated wingless varieties. They are easy and cheap to raise.

I know what you mean, but do you realize that almost all pet store anoles are wild-caught?

No they aren’t, At first they are wild caught but they take hundreds of generations to become domesticated. The ones in the pet store are domesticated. If they weren’t, the pet store wouldn’t take it out of it’s natural environment.

Domesticated Anoles - that’s a good one! Anoles are collected extensively in Louisiana and Florida and all along the Gulf Coast inbetween. As much as 95% (or more) of them come directly from the wild. The reason: there is not enough of a profit margin to raise them commercially. Once again, the inmates are running the asylum.

Nevermind that.Anyway now that I think of it they probably are. So I guess this would be safe. But what I meant this project to be for is outdoor anoles, you know .......wild.This is to attract them.I guess you could use them, though.

I think it would make a good food source. I would assume, though I’m no expert, that if you are away from areas with cars and pesticides, that the chances of getting a "sick" fruit fly is low as if they were doused in pesticides or had other problems, I think it would be noticable by odd behavious (such as twitching, not flying)

But, I’m not an expert, this is an assumption.

 Cool anole project!!!!

we do that bottle idea every year. but i never thought about doing it for flies. i fix ant catchers that way or for bees but in that cause i put some koolaide or pop in them and set them on the ground to help with the ant problem they go in and not out.
